Five Steamers Earn All-MISL Honors

May 22, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

Five members of the St. Louis Steamers are among the players selected to the All-MISL First and Second teams for the 2005-06 regular season. The league announced the teams Monday, May 22. Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips, who helped lead the Steamers to a 23-7 regular season record and the 2006 MISL Regular Season Championship, headlined the First Team. Phillips was the only player to appear on each ballot cast in a formal voting process that polled media members, league coaches, and team officials. Steamers defender Genoni Martinez joins Phillips on the First Team, while Jamar Beasley, Carlos "Chile" Farias and Shaun David were named to the Second Team. The Steamers placed the most players on the 2005-06 teams.

In addition to Phillips and Martinez, the All-MISL First Team consists of Milwaukee Wave forward Greg Howes, Baltimore Blast forwards Adauto Neto and Giuliano Celenza and Philadelphia Kixx defender Pat Morris.

Voters were asked to select two complete teams of All-MISL players. Each voter was asked to choose one goalkeeper, two defenders, and three forward/midfielders for each team. A first-team vote was worth two points and a second-team vote was worth one point.

A total of eight players, rather than six earned Second Team status, because votes tabulated for All-MISL Second Team forward/midfielder and defender positions resulted in exact ties. Milwaukee Wave forward Todd Dusosky earned the greatest amount of votes among the Second Team. Dusosky is joined at the forward/midfielder spot by St. Louis midfielder Jamar Beasley, forward Shaun David, and forward Carlos "Chile" Farias. Second Team defenders include Milwaukee's Matt Schmidt, Chicago Storm's Lazo Alavanja and Baltimore's Danny Kelly. Baltimore goalkeeper Sagu completes the second team.

The All-MISL honor is the second of Phillips' MISL career. He becomes the first goalkeeper outside Victor Nogueira and Peter Pappas to win the All-MISL First Team Goalkeeper recognition since the 1994-95 season. Phillips said he's honored by the First Team selection, but credits his teammates for his success. "Our team is a very hard working team," Phillips said. "Our midfielders and forwards played well all season, making my job a lot easier." For Martinez, the All-MISL selection is the sixth of his career.

The MISL will announce their Coach of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year honorees on Tuesday, followed by the Defender of the Year on Wednesday and MVP on Thursday.
