2005-06 All-MISL Teams Announced

May 22, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release

WESTPORT, Conn. (Monday, May 22, 2006) - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced Monday the 2005-06 All-MISL teams for the 2005-06 Regular Season. The First Team was headlined by St. Louis Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips who helped lead the Steamers to a 23-7 regular season record and the 2006 MISL Regular Season Championship. Phillips was the only player to appear on each ballot cast in a formal voting process that polled media members, league coaches, and team officials.

Joining Phillips on the All-MISL First Team were forwards Greg Howes (Milwaukee Wave), Adauto Neto (Baltimore Blast), and Giuliano Celenza (Baltimore Blast), as well as defenders Genoni Martinez (St. Louis Steamers) and Pat Morris (Philadelphia KiXX). Voters were asked to select two complete teams of All-MISL players. Each voter was asked to choose one goalkeeper, two defenders, and three forward/midfielders for each team. A first-team vote was worth two points and a second-team vote was worth one point.

Second Team status was earned by a total of eight players, rather than six, because votes tabulated for All-MISL Second Team forward/midfielder and defender positions resulted in exact ties. Milwaukee Wave forward Todd Dusosky earned the greatest amount of votes among the Second Team. Dusosky is joined at the forward/midfielder spot by a trio of St. Louis attackers - Jamar Beasley, Shaun David, and Carlos "Chile" Farias. Second Team defenders include Matt Schmidt (Milwaukee), Lazo Alavanja (Chicago Storm) and Danny Kelly (Baltimore). Goalkeeper Sagu (Baltimore) completes the Second Team.

Next to St. Louis (five), Baltimore (four) placed the most players on the 2005-06 teams following a 17-13 regular season. The Blast ultimately won the 2005-06 MISL Championship Series title live on ESPN2 on April 30, as the club won its third championship in four seasons. The 2004-05 MISL Champion Wave placed three players on the All-MISL teams. Milwaukee finished 17-13, before being eliminated by Baltimore in the MISL Championship Series Semifinals. The second-year Chicago Storm (13-17) earned their first All-MISL honor. The Philadelphia KiXX (10-20) maintained a presence on the All-MISL First Team for a third consecutive season.

For Phillips, the leading vote-getter and a native of Tampa, Fla., the All-MISL honor is the second of his League career (1995-96). He becomes the first goalkeeper outside Victor Nogueira and Peter Pappas to win the All-MISL First Team Goalkeeper recognition since the 1994-95 season. Howes, the MISL Spalding Scoring Champion for the third consecutive season, claims his fourth consecutive All-MISL First Team distinction. For his teammate Dusosky, it was also his third All-MISL honor. Celenza and Kelly, like Phillips, were both second-time All-League picks. Beasley, David, Neto - all members of the 2003-04 MISL All-Rookie Team, as well as Alavanja, Schmidt and Sagu were named All-MISL for the first time in their careers.

The All-MISL First Team defense of Martinez and Morris, leads this year's group with six and five All-League honors, respectively. Either Martinez or Morris has won the Defender of the Year in each of the past three seasons. This year's MISL Defender of the Year will be announced on Wednesday.
