WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Behind a sterling effort from starter Spencer Adams and a season-high three home runs from the offense, the Warthogs cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night.

Adams (7-4), who is ranked the third-best prospect in the White Sox system according to Baseball America, tossed eight innings and allowed just three hits while striking out four batters. The right-hander now has logged seven or more innings in five of his last seven starts.

It did not take long for the Warthogs (27-40) to take an edge against Salem starter Daniel McGrath (1-3). Hunter Jones smacked a leadoff home run to left that gave Winston-Salem an early 1-0 edge. Jones' blast was the first leadoff homer for the franchise since Adam Engel accomplished the feat on August 29, 2015, at BB&T Ballpark against Frederick.

Winston-Salem quickly threatened in the second by putting runners on second and third with one out. Cleuluis Rondon then struck out swinging, but he reached safely as the ball scooted past catcher Jordan Procyshen to allow Brett Austin to score and Michael Suiter to move to third. After Rondon stole second, Jones followed with a two-run single to put Winston-Salem up 4-0.

The 'Hogs used the long ball to add to their lead in the third. With one out and nobody on, Nick Basto smacked a solo bomb to left to put Winston-Salem up five. The Carolina League Player of the Month for April has now swatted seven dingers at High-A level this season. Two batters later, Toby Thomas walloped a solo blast to left that gave the Warthogs a 6-0 edge. McGrath ended his night going five innings, allowing five hits and six runs.

Winston-Salem provided its final tally in the seventh off Salem reliever Ben Taylor. With a runner on first and two outs, Rondon delivered an RBI double to make it 7-0.

Salem (41-25), who clinched the first-half Southern Division Championship on Monday, scored its lone run in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Rafael Devers against Euclides Leyer.

Winston-Salem continues their four-game set against the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark on Friday at 7 p.m. Winston sends left-hander Tanner Banks (0-0, 7.50 ERA) to the bump against Salem southpaw Jalen Beeks (4-3, 3.02 ERA). The Pregame Dash begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can tune in on wsdash.com/broadcast or the TuneIn Radio App.

The current homestand features two postgame fireworks shows. Friday's will be presented by Grand Rental Station, while Saturday's will be presented by Caterpillar. The homestead also features a Food Truck Saturday, Kids Run the Bases on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a Fathers Day Play Catch on the Field for Sunday.
