ICYMI: Lynchburg's Anderson Polanco held the Mudcats to a run and four hits over six innings while leading the Hillcats to a series clinching 4-2 victory against Carolina at City Stadium in Lynchburg on Wednesday night. The Hillcats (43-23) scored four runs on eight hits in the victory and took the series three games to one. They scored a run in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings against starter Enderson Franco and won their third straight game.
ON TO THE NEXT ONE: The Mudcats begin a four day home stand with games one and two of six total versus the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Five County Stadium. Today's doubleheader begins at 5:00 p.m. and is the first of two doubleheaders in the six game series. The Mudcats and Blue Rocks will additionally play a doubleheader on Saturday, June 18 with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Zebulon. Game two of today's doubleheader is the makeup of a game postponed in Wilmington on May 26; game two of Saturday's twin bill is the makeup of a game postponed on April 28 in Zebulon. The Mudcats are 5-3 against the Blue Rocks and have hit .263 and pitched to a 3.18 ERA over eight games versus Wilmington this season.
STARTING OFF: Raymar Navarro will start for the Mudcats in game one of today's doubleheader against the visiting Wilmington Blue Rocks. Today's start marks Navarro's fourth straight since entering the starting rotation in late May. Navarro began the season in the bullpen and is 4-1 with a 4.50 ERA over 13 games and three starts this season. He is 2-0 as a starter and has pitched to a 3.86 ERA over three starts and 14.0 innings this season (14.0ip, 13h, 7r, 6er, 2bb, 8so). Navarro last pitched on 6/11 against the Dash at Five County Stadium and earned his second straight win after allowed just two runs and three hits over 5.0 innings pitched... Zach Quintana will get the game two start today against the Blue Rocks. Quintana is 1-5 with a 5.46 ERA over 13 games and three starts this season with the Mudcats. He last pitched on 6/13 in Lynchburg and allowed a run on three hits over one and 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed a home run in his last start and has allowed six home runs over 31.1 innings this season. Quintana is 0-3 with a 7.84 ERA as a starter this season.
MASHING MENESES: Joey Meneses was 0-for-4 last night in Lynchburg, but is batting .512/.543/.791 over his last 11 games with seven doubles, one triple, one home run and 12 RBI. Meneses is also batting a league high .374 since April 23 (.374/.430/.563, 47g, 65h, 22xbh, 16 2b, 1 3b, 5hr, 31rbi). He was recently named the Carolina League Player of the Week (6g, .500/.519/.692) for the week ending on June 12.
HEATING UP: Stephen Gaylor has hit safely in six straight games and is batting .462/.517/.462 (12-for-26, 7r, 3bb, 2sb) during the streak and since returning from a short stint with Triple-A Gwinnett on 6/10... Joseph Odom has hit safely in 19 of his last 22 games and is batting .321/.363/.548 (27-for-84, 4hr, 14rbi) over his last 22 games... Braxton Davidson is 6-for-16 over his last five games and is batting .375/.474/.688 (3 2b, 1 3b, 1hr, 7rbi) since 6/12.
WHERE THEY RANK: Joey Meneses currently leads the Carolina League in batting average (.339) and hits (77). Meneses is also 4th in OBP (.401), 4th in SLG (.493) and 3rd in OPS (.894) in the league this season... Joseph Odom is 10th in the league in average (.283) and 7th in the league in SLG (.472)... Evan Phillips and Chase Johnson-Mullins are both tied for 3rd in the league in most saves (7)... Braxton Davidson is 3rd in the league in most strikeouts (78)... Jordan Edgerton is 4th in most strikeouts (70) in the league... Starter Max Povse is currently 3rd in the Carolina League in strikeouts (70)... Ryan Clark leads the league in most losses (8), most home runs allowed (11) and most runs/earned runs (51/45) allowed.
LOCAL ALL-STARS: Cary and Green Hope High School's Max Povse and Clayton High School's Evan Phillips were both named to the 2016 Carolina League All-Star team... Povse was 2nd in the league in Ks with 64 over 63.1 innings pitched at the time of the announcement on 6/8. He was also 2nd the league in FIP (2.55) and 4th in K/BB ratio (4.57)... As of 6/8, Phillips led CL relievers (min. 20.0ip) in WHIP (0.68) & average against (.105); he was also 2nd in ERA (0.82).
POW: Joey Meneses was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of 6/6 through 6/12 after batting .500/.519/.692 with three doubles, a triple and seven RBI over six games played.
