Mudcats Drop Series Finale 4-2 in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, VA - Lynchburg's Anderson Polanco held the Mudcats to a run and four hits over six innings while leading the Hillcats to a series clinching 4-2 victory against Carolina at City Stadium in Lynchburg on Wednesday night.

The Hillcats (43-23) scored four runs on eight hits in the victory and took the series three games to one. They scored a run in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings against starter Enderson Franco and won their third straight game.

Franco (4-4, 4.80) pitched into the sixth, but left after striking out Paul Hendrix immediately before the game was delayed due to rain. The delay lasted one hour and 13 minutes and play was eventually resumed in the sixth inning with the Hillcats leading 4-1.

Neither starting pitcher returned after the delay. Franco took the loss and allowed four runs on seven hits. He walked two, struck out four and allowed more than three runs in a start for the first time since his opening night loss in Salem.

Michael O'Neal followed Franco after the delay and finished the game while working through two and 2/3 scoreless relief innings. O'Neal struck out five, walked one and gave up one hit in his first appearance back from Double-A Mississippi.

Polanco (3-1, 1.88) earned the win for the Hillcats after holding the Mudcats (27-37) to a run on four hits over six innings pitched. Polanco finished the start with two walks and four strikeouts while going through six full innings.

Braxton Davidson started the Carolina second with a single to right and was eventually joined on the bases by both Jordan Edgerton and Tanner Murphy. The Mudcats loaded the bases in the second, but failed to score in the inning. Davidson was 1-for-3, Edgerton was 2-for-4 and Joseph Daris was 2-for-4 in the loss.

Lynchburg's Taylor Murphy started the scoring with a first inning triple and managed to score on the same play after a throwing error. Murphy was 1-for-3 and both Daniel Salters and Mark Mathais had two hits and a run for the Hillcats. David Armendariz had a RBI single in the fourth and Yu-Cheng Chang forced in a run with a groundout.

Stephen Gaylor drove in Carolina's first run with a groundout in the fifth was 1-for-5 while stretching his hitting streak to six straight games. Edgerton singled in the eighth and drove in a run as well for Carolina in the loss.

The game was played around a one hour and 13 minute delay and was played in two hours and 31 minutes. Wednesday's game was also Carolina's final road game in the first half. The Mudcats finished the half at 12-22 on the road.

The Mudcats return to Five County Stadium on Thursday with a doubleheader and games one and two of six in four days against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The first game of Thursday's doubleheader begins at 5:00 p.m. in Zebulon. Raymar Navarro will start for the Mudcats in game one of Thursday's twin bill.
