MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Second baseman Ian Happ has been selected to represent the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the 2016 California-Carolina League All-Star Game in Lake Elsinore, Calif., the Carolina League announced Thursday. Happ will join right-handed pitchers Trevor Clifton, Zach Hedges and Jake Stinnett, as well as pitching coach Anderson Tavarez and athletic trainer Toby Williams at Lake Elsinore's The Diamond on Tuesday, June 21 for the 9:30 p.m. ET game.
Happ has been a difficult out all season, and is currently tied for the the Carolina league in walks (45) and ranks fifth in on-base percentage (.392). The former ninth overall pick in 2015 leads the Pelicans in walks, on-base percentage, hits (61) and OPS (.813). He ranks as the Chicago Cubs' No. 3 prospect on MLB.com and as the 73rd-best prospect in baseball, with Baseball America rating him 87th.
Happ was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of April 18-24, hitting .429/.600/.905 with three home runs, eight RBIs, seven runs scored and nine walks against four strikeouts in seven contests during the week. The former University of Cincinnati Bearcat also registered a 20-game on-base streak from May 13-June 6, tied for the sixth-longest of any player in the circuit this year. On the campaign, Happ is hitting .274/.392/.422 with six home runs and 37 RBI over 64 games.
The addition of Happ to the Carolina League All-Star team roster helps Myrtle Beach match the number of All-Stars they sent to last year's contest. Outfielder Mark Zagunis, infielder Jeimer Candelario and right-handed pitchers Duane Underwood Jr. and Jonathan Martinez represented Myrtle Beach in 2015.
The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
