
Three Homers Not Nearly Enough

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-19) hit three home runs, but lost their third consecutive game, a 14-6 defeat at the hands of the Sioux City Explorers (20-14) on Friday night.
The Explorers got on the scoreboard right away in the bottom of the first inning. Jason Tuttle led off the inning with a double up the first base line. Tuttle came around to score when Pete Pirman followed with a triple up the third base line. Pirman later scored on an RBI groundout by Paul Weicard. After one inning, the Explorers led, 2-0.
Sioux City added four more in the second. The Explorers started the inning by loading the bases on singles by Alex Llanos, Julian Benavidez, and Jason Radwan. Tuttle followed with a groundball to Canaries second baseman Casey Gordon. Gordon bobbled the ball and everyone was safe, including Llanos, who scored to put Sioux City up 3-0. Pirman followed by grounding into a fielder's choice. Tuttle was out at second, but Benavidez scored and the Explorers led by four. Jake Daubert added a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing home Radwan for a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Pirman stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Tim Marks. Pirman scored on a single by Jorge Moreno, and after two innings the Explorers were ahead 6-0.
The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Casey Gordon hit his second homer of the year, and his first with the Canaries. Gordon's solo shot pulled the Birds within five, 6-1.
The Explorers got the run back and added another in the bottom of the third. With Brandon Jones on base, Benavidez hit his sixth homer of the season. The two-run homer by Benavidez put Sioux City up 8-1 after three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Canaries got a couple runs back. Abner Arroyo led off the inning with his sixth homer of the season to make it 8-2. Orlando Miller followed with a groundball to Explorers second baseman Alex Llanos. Llanos misplayed the ball allowing Miller to reach. Miller advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a delayed steal, and scored on a wild pitch. Miller's run pulled the Canaries within five runs of their I-29 rival, 8-3.
Sioux City continued their offensive outburst in the bottom of the fourth. The Explorers loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single to knock Canaries starting pitcher Jeff Landing out of the game. With Lenny Bays on in relief Brandon Jones singled to the left side off of third baseman Matt Imwalle. Jones single brough Pirman across home plate for the third time in the game. Llanos hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Daubert. After four innings, the Explorers were ahead by seven, 10-3.
The Birds got one back in the fifth inning. Gordon tripled and scored on a groundout by James Shanks. The run made it a 10-4 game.
Sioux City tallied three more runs in the sixth inning. Paul Weichard walked and Jones singled to put two on for Llanos. Llanos doubled to left field scoring both Weichard and Jones, and giving Sioux City a 12-4 lead. Llanos later scored in the inning to give the Explorers a 13-4 advantage.
The Canaries got two runs in the eighth. Abner Arroyo led off the inning with a single, and Orlando Miller followed with his sixth homer of the season. The runs made it a 13-6 game, and would be the last of the night for the Canaries.
Sioux City got one more in the bottom of the eighth inning when Jorge Moreno doubled to score Jason Tuttle. The final run of the game gave Sioux City the 14-6 final.
Jeff Landing (6-4) pitched three innings giving up 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits, and suffered his second consecutive loss. Robert Wooley (2-1) got the win for the Explorers.
The Canaries continue their series in Sioux City on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds will return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday, August 20 for NASCAR night presented by Alltel Wireless.
