Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-18) fell victim to a five-run fifth inning by the St. Joe Blacksnakes (14-19) in an 8-4 loss on Thursday night at Phil Welch Stadium.
The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. James Shanks and Ben Van Iderstine got aboard with two-out singles. With runners on the corners, Abner Arroyo doubled to the warning track in left field. Shanks and Van Iderstine scored on the play and the Canaries were ahead 2-0 after a half inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Blacksnakes used some two-out magic of their own to cut into the Canaries lead. With two outs Dylan Parzyk singled and Dustin Yount walked. That put runners on first and second for David Fowler. Fowler singled to score Parzyk. After one inning the Birds led, 2-1.
St. Joe went ahead in the second inning. Carter McQuigg reached on an error by Canaries third baseman Matt Imwalle. After Chad Sosebee followed with a walk to push McQuigg to second, the runners went to second and third on a passed ball. A wild pitch by Canaries starting pitcher Kevin Cheppenko allowed McQuigg to score, and the game was tied, 2-2. Later in the inning Andy Wilson singled to score Sosebee, and St. Joe took their first lead of the game, 3-2.
The Birds tied the game in the fourth. Damon Lessler was hit by a pitch to get on base. Lessler went to second on an errant pick-off throw by Snakes starting pitcher Greg Bicknell. Lessler came around to score on a two-out single by Casey Gordon. Gordon's third RBI of the series tied the game, 3-3.
The Blacksnakes blasted their way to a five run lead in the fifth. With two outs Victor Burgos singled and Parzyk walked. Yount singled to bring home Burgos and give the Snakes a 4-3 lead. Fowler followed with his seventh homer of the season. The three-run shot made it 7-3 Blacksnake. Curt Miaso made it back-to-back jacks with his fourth long ball of the year. The homer knocked Cheppenko out of the game and put the Canaries down 8-3.
The Canaries got one more in the ninth. Shanks doubled and went to third on a ground out by Van Iderstine. Abner Arroyo drove Shanks home with a sacrifice fly to right field for the game's final run in the Canaries 8-4 loss. Arroyo was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the contest.
Cheppenko (6-5) gave up eight runs, six earned, on seven hits and suffered his first loss since June 26. Greg Bicknell (4-2) got the win for St. Joe.
The Canaries now head to Sioux City where they will begin a weekend series against the Explorers on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds will return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday, August 20 for NASCAR night presented by Alltel Wireless.
