St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 9, 2007) - The Saints lineup was supposed to be stronger with the additions of Derrick White and Demetrius Heath, but instead El Paso Diablos starter Michael Cervera silenced the Saints bats as they lost 6-1 on Thursday night in front of 6,671 at Midway Stadium.
Cervera was making just his seventh start of the season in his 23rd appearance and the Diablos may have found another starter. He hurled 7.0 shutout innings allowing just two Scooter Jordan singles while walking one and striking out seven. During his seven innings of work he didn't allow a Saints runner past second. The Saints managed just three total hits on the night.
On the flip side Saints starter Alec Shepherd cruised through the first three innings, but ran into problems in the fifth and sixth. He gave up a solo homer to Korey Drew in the fourth, his fifth of the season to give the Diablos a 1-0 lead.
The Diablos got four runs in the fifth when J.D. Reininger hit a one out single to left. Shepherd plunked Brian Grupp and that was followed by an RBI single from Albenis Machado. Drew added an RBI double and after moving to third on a ground out, scored on a wild pitch. The final run scored when Heath misplayed a grounder allowing a run to score.
The Saints scored their only run in the ninth inning on an RBI single from White.
The Saints welcome in the Fort Worth Cats to town on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Adam Brandenburg (6-3, 4,25). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network and heard on KBGY 107.5 FM. It is a Night Off for Blue Collar Workers presented by Labor Ready.
