Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, announced the return of the College of the Holy Cross alumni; forwards Everett Sheen and Brodie Sheahan, and defenseman Matt Clune.
Sheen, 26, joins the Reign roster for the third time in his career. Last year Sheen posted 23 points (3g, 20a) for the Reign in the regular season, and four points (3g, 1a) in the postseason. One of his three playoff goals included the overtime, series-winner against the Utah Grizzlies which gave the Reign their first taste of Round 2 playoff hockey and their first-ever series sweep.
Sheen played his first professional game in the 2011-12 season with the Reading Royals where he remained for 33 games earning nine points (5g, 4a). Midway through the season, the Lethbridge, Alberta native appeared in four AHL games with the Providence Bruins. Toward the end of the season Sheen joined the Reign where in his first game he began a nine-game point streak racking up 15 points. He finished 2011-12 with 18 points (9g, 9a) in the regular season and three points (1g, 2a) in the first round of the playoffs.
In 2011 Sheen graduated from Holy Cross after a four-year career with the Crusaders and captained the team his senior year. He earned a total of 104 points (52g, 52a) in 149 games. Each season with Holy Cross, Sheen was among the top three scorers trailing Brodie Sheahan for two of those seasons.
Sheahan, 27, returns for his second year with the Reign. Last season the forward registered a career-high 34 points (11g, 23a) during the regular season. In the postseason, Sheahan continued to be a key player for the Reign as he scored in the final minutes of Game 4 against the Utah Grizzlies to tie it and send it into overtime where Sheen would score the game-winner. Sheahan scored two goals in 10 playoff appearances for Ontario.
Also a graduate of Holy Cross, Sheahan and Sheen spent three seasons together before Sheahan graduated in 2010 and made his professional debut in the CHL with the Bloomington Blaze coached by current Reign head coach, Jason Christie. In Bloomington, Sheahan, also a native of Lethbridge, Alberta, recorded 25 points (7g, 18a). The next year, 2011-12 he earned 27 points (9g, 18a) in 33 games for the Bloomington Blaze.
During his college years, the 5-foot-11, 170-pounder ranked among the top four scorers his final three years, including leading the team in points with 33 (13g, 20a) his sophomore year. He earned a total of 91 points (40g, 51a) in 130 games with Holy Cross.
Clune, 24, completed his rookie season in Ontario with 15 points (2g, 13a) in 69 regular season games, the second most of all Reign rookies, and one assist in six postseason appearances. The Toronto, Ontario native was next only to Captain Derek Couture in Reign penalty minutes with 135, putting him seventh in the league in that category for rookies.
Clune made his professional debut with the Stockton Thunder with three games in 2011-12 upon completing his collegiate career with the College of the Holy Cross where first played with Sheen and Sheahan.
At Holy Cross, Clune registered 53 points (14g, 39a) in 140 games. A two-time member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team, Clune also received the 2012 Michael P. Quinn Award given to the best defensive player at Holy Cross. Before attending college, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound defenseman played junior hockey with the St. Michael's Buzzers (OPJHL).
