Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, announced their first rookie signing for the 2013-14 season with the addition of forward Matt White and have also added two-year pro right wing, Mike Towns.
White, 24, just completed his third season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha (WCHA) where he recorded a total of 99 points (47g, 52a) in 114 games with the Mavericks. Consistently one of the team's top scorers, White's sophomore season was his best as he led the team with 40 points (17g, 23a) in 38 games.
White is the third Southern California native on the Reign's roster; originally from Whittier, White began his junior hockey career in the USHL with the Omaha Lancers (USHL) in 2007. He played with the Lancers for three seasons and led the team in points during his final season in 2009-10.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward was named USHL Player of the Year in 2010 when he finished second in the league with 82 points and tied for first with 35 goals. His 47 assists put him fourth in the USHL in that category. In 2007-08, White's first season with the Lancers, the team was awarded the Andersen cup for finishing the regular season with the most points and they went on to win the championship Clark Cup.
Towns, 27, is entering his third professional season. The winger played in the SPHL with the Knoxville Ice Bears, CHL with the Denver Cutthroats, and ECHL with the Idaho Steelheads during the 2012-13 season. He spent the most time, 34 games, with the Cutthroats, where he earned three points (1g, 2a) and 60 penalty minutes. Towns played 24 games with the Steelheads and recorded five points (2g, 3a) and 82 penalty minutes, and five games with the Ice Bears posting three assists.
In his professional debut with the Ice Bears, Towns played in 55 games and registered 24 points (9g, 15a) and 82 penalty minutes and appeared in five postseason games where he earned an assist.
From 2007-11 Towns played for the Adrian College Bulldogs in a total of 103 games; the Surrey, British Columbia native collected 60 points (24g, 36a) and 193 penalty minutes in that time. Prior to his collegiate career, Towns played junior hockey in the British Columbia Hockey League for the Penticton Vees from 2004-07 and the then Penticton Panthers in 2003-04. While in the BCHL, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound forward recorded 52 points (21g, 31a) and 517 penalty minutes.
