Three Canaries Get All-Star Selections

Sioux Falls, SD - The American Association announced today that three members of the Sioux Falls Canaries have been selected to represent the North Division in the 2007 American Association All-Star Game, which will take place at The Birdcage on Tuesday, July 17. The 2007 American Association All-Star Game is presented by Sanford Health, Argus Leader Media, Lithia Dodge of Sioux Falls, Chevrolet of Sioux Falls, and First PREMIER Bank & PREMIER Bankcard.

Canaries Third Baseman Matt Imwalle was the only Canaries player to be voted into the All-Star Game by league managers and media members. Imwalle is hitting .290 this season with 10 home runs and 29 RBI.

Imwalle will be joined on the North Division All-Star Team by Canaries Catcher Tim Marks and Canaries Utililty Player Will Smith. Marks and Smith were selected as reserves for the North Division All-Star Team, by St. Paul Saints Manager George Tsamis, who earned his spot as North Division Manager by leading the Saints to the American Association Championship Series in 2006. Smith is hitting a Canaries-best, .352 this season with seven home runs and 24 RBI. Marks is batting .297 this season with 15 RBI and 17 runs scored.

The three Canaries All-Stars will be joined by four Lincoln Saltdogs, three St. Paul Saints, and one representative from each the Sioux City Explorers and St. Joe Blacksnakes. The Saltdogs will be represented by four starters: first baseman Brett Cooley, second baseman Josh Patton, designated hitter Seth Pietsch, and outfielder Pichi Balet. All three Saints representatives will also start in the game with Marcel Longmire catching while Brent Krause and Brian Sprout will both start in the outfield. The Explorers Nick McCoola will start at shortstop for the North Division and Blacksnakes outfielder Paul Weichard rounds out the reserve players.

The South Division All-Stars include the following starters: first baseman Walter Olmstead (El Paso Diablos), second baseman Juan Ventura (Shreveport Sports), shortstop James Lofton (Coastal Bend Aviators), third baseman Trino Aguilar (Pensacola Pelicans), catcher Mathew Kent (El Paso), designated hitter Jorge Alverez (El Paso), and an outfield consisting of Brian Fryer (Coastal Bend), Marcos Rodriguez (Pensacola), and J.P. Schmidt (Shreveport). The south division reserves will be utility player Jordan Foster and catcher Kelley Gulledge, both of the Fort Worth Cats.

Pitchers for the 2007 American Association All-Star Game will be selected later this week.
