Errors Cost Birds in 7-5 Loss

Robstown, TX - The Sioux Falls Canaries (0-1) began the second half with a 7-5 defeat at the hands of the Coastal Bend Aviators (1-0). The Birds saw their lead disappear on two occasions thanks to defensive errors.

The Canaries got out to an early lead in the top of the second inning. Abner Arroyo led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a two-out wild pitch. Tim Marks brought Arroyo around with a single for a 1-0 lead. Marks got to second base on a wild pitch before David Keesee brought him home with a double to put the Canaries ahead by a pair, 2-0.

Coastal Bend cut the Birds lead in half in the bottom of the third inning. Grant Richardson doubled and scored on a single by Juan Figueroa to make it a 2-1 game.

The Aviators took the lead in the fifth inning. Pat Mahomes struck out the first two of the inning, but Coastal Bend put together a two out rally to take the lead. Richardson doubled and Bryon Smith walked to put two on for Figueroa. Figueroa singled to score Richardson and tie the game, 2-2. With runners on the corners, J.D. Foust came to the plate. Foust popped up a foul ball to first baseman Abner Arroyo that should have ended the inning. Arroyo dropped the foul ball, allowing the inning to continue. Later in the at bat, Foust came through with an RBI single to score Smith. After five innings, the Aviators led, 3-2.

The Birds took back the lead in the eighth. Cameron Coughlan got aboard with a lead-off walk. Orlando Miller doubled to score Coughlan, tying the game, 3-3. Wil Quintana followed with his 12th homer of the season to give the Birds a 5-3 lead.

Another error opened the door for the Aviators in the bottom of the eighth. The Aviators loaded the bases on singles by Will Lewis, Matt Spencer, and James Lofton. Robertson hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by Wil Quintana. Lewis scored on the error and made it a 5-4 game. Bryon Smith followed with a ground ball back to the pitcher. Jerrod Fuell came home with the throw to retire Spencer for the second out of the inning. Figueroa continued to haunt the Canaries with a two-out single that scored Lofton and Robertson and put Coastal Bend ahead, 6-5. J.D. Foust added one more blow with an RBI single to score Smith for the 7-5 final.

Jonathan Hunton (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for Coastal Bend. Jerrod Fuell (1-1) took his first loss of the season. Tom Atlee struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save of the year.
