St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. JOSEPH, MO (July 3, 2007) - The St. Paul Saints pitchers not only lost control on the mound, but lost control of the game as they gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth and lost 8-7 to the St. Joseph Blacksnakes on Tuesday night at Phil Welch Stadium.

With the Saints up 7-6 in the ninth closer Tony Pierce gave up a lead off single to Dustin Yount. After striking out Terry Robles Pierce walked Chad Sosebee and hit Curt Miaso to load the bases. Pierce then forced in the winning run by walking Eric Padilla and the winning run scored when he walked Andy Wilson. It was the first loss for the Saints when leading after seven innings.

The Saints were comfortably in front leading 7-2 after the top of the sixth. They scored two in the second on back-to-back RBI singles from Alex Fonseca and Skip Adams.

In the third the Saints took a 5-0 lead when Brian Sprout clubbed a three run homer to left-center, his sixth of the season.

The wheels came off in the sixth with the Saints leading 7-2. Adam Brandenburg was cruising to that point, but with one out he hit Casey Gordon in the face. Gordon was forced to leave the game and it appeared to shake up Brandenburg. He got the next batter to fly out to center, but walked the next three hitters to force in a run. He then grooved an 0-1 pitch to Yount who clubbed a three-run single off the right field wall to make it 7-6.

The Saints had a number of opportunities to expand on the lead over the final three innings, but were 0-7 with runners in scoring position in innings seven through nine.

The same two teams meet Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Brian Whinnery (4-1, 2.16) to the hill against Blacksnakes RHP Dustin Bolton (1-4, 4.89). The game can be heard live on KBGY 107.5 FM.
