ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 25, 2003) – In one of the most prolific offensive displays in league history, designated hitter Juan Thomas bashed three home runs, including a mammoth grand slam, and drove in seven RBI to lead the Atlantic City Surf over the Bridgeport Bluefish, 13-3, Saturday evening in front of 6,372 fans at the Sandcastle.

"The Large Human", as he is called by Surf fans, tied the Atlantic League single-game home run record that is held by 13 different players. Thomas hit a two run homer in the second, a solo shot in the fifth, and a towering grand slam in the sixth inning that traveled over the left field fence and on to the airport runway which stands about 450 feet from home plate.

Thomas hit three homers for the second time in his Atlantic League career, with the first coming back in on June 9, 1998, when he smashed three three-run shots to set another league record with nine RBI, which still stands.

Bridgeport starter Brad Cornett, who entered the game with a league-best 1.90 ERA, was rocked for a season-high 12 runs, seven earned, on 11 hits through six innings pitched to pick up just his second loss of the season. Cornett (4-2) surrendered all three of Thomas' home runs.

The Atlantic City offense overshadowed a solid outing by starter Anthony Chavez (9-5), who allowed three runs through 6.2 innings pitched while striking out seven to increase his league-leading total to 80 on the season.

Newly acquired Ben Candelaria had three hits and an RBI for the Surf while Lauro Felix and Ric Johnson each had two hits and three runs scored.

The Surf, whose 13 runs scored marked a season-high, improved to 8-6 on the season while the Bluefish dropped to 7-8.

ON DECK: The Surf continue their nine-game homestand with a three-game series against the Nashua Pride beginning on Saturday, July 25, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
