Rox Rally by Spirit in Ninth

The North Shore Spirit watched the Brockton Rox score six runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Spirit 7-6, at New Fraser Field in Lynn. The Rox rally was highlighted by a Mike Torres 3-run double with the bases loaded to seal the comeback.

The Spirit was on cruise control early behind starter Jeremy Sugarman. After theRox touched Sugarman for a run in the second the Spirit put two runs on the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth inngs for a 6-1 lead heading into the ninth.

In the fourth, Carlos Sepulveda tripled and scored on an Eddie Muth single. Fran Riordan doubled Muth to third and Rob Fischer knocked Muth home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.

In the fifth, Yuri Sanchez led the inning off with a triple down the line in right and scored on a John Schmitz single. Carlos Sepulveda then stepped up and doubled Sanchez home for a 4-1 lead.

The sixth inning was highlighted by a Sanchez 2-run home-run to make the score 6-1 Spirit.

Sugarman pitched eight innings of 7-hit, 1-run ball before exiting for reliever Chad Bircher. In the ninth, Bircher struggled allowing 3-hits, 1-walk and four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning as Brockton rallied to make the score 6-5. On came, closer Joe Ricciardi who did not fare much better, Ricciardi allowed 2-hits and 2-runs including the game winning hit by Torres.

Joe Ricciardi (1-5) suffered the loss, Brockton newcomer John Sterling (1-0) worked one inning to earn the win and Conor Brooks picked up his league leading 12 saves.

Spirit right-fielder Carlos Sepulveda went 4-5 at the plate, which included a single, double and triple. The Sanchez homer was his third of the year.

The Spirit loss drops them back to .500 at 7-7 while Brockton improves to 8-6.

Both clubs resume the three game series Saturday night at New Fraser Field. It is a big night for Spirit fans. The Spirit will honor former Red Sox and St. Mary's star Tony Conigliaro prior to the game.
