Ramirez Home Run in 13th Leads Bears to 5-3 Win

NEWARK, NJ, July 25-Pito Ramirez crushed a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Newark Bears defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 5-3, Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The thirteen-inning game was the longest played in the Atlantic League this season.
With Eddie Lara on first base and one man out in the 13th, Ramirez hit a Kevin McClain pitch over the wall in left field for the game-winning home run, his 3rd of the season since re-signing with the Bears eight games ago. It was the second walk-off home run for the Bears this season. Newark is now 4-3 in extra-inning games, while Pennsylvania is 3-7.
McClain (0-9) took the loss, his league-leading ninth of the year. The home run he allowed to Ramirez was his league-high 16th allowed this season.
Newark tied the game in dramatic fashion, too, plating the tying runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Hipolito Martinez, who just signed with the Bears on Thursday, delivered a two-run single to tie the game, 3-3. The Bears had failed in bases-loaded situations twice before in the game, in the 4th and 7th innings.
The Bears bullpen was terrific in relief of starter Tom Stepka as three relievers tossed six innings of shutout ball. Rolando Viera (1-1) picked up the win with two innings of scoreless and hitless baseball. Hut Smith and Reggie Harris each chipped in with two shutout innings of relief.
Newark will open up a six-game road trip with a game in Bridgeport against the Bluefish Saturday night. Alberto Castillo (4-2) will pitch for the Bears.
