Third Period Stretch Too Much
January 16, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The U.S. National Team Development Program nailed down a 5-1 decision against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena Saturday by scoring three third period goals.
After turning away three Black Hawks power plays, the National Team Development Program broke through on special teams at 18:14 of the first period when Joey Anderson deflected in a cross-slot pass by Kieffer Bellows near the outset of a power play.
Niko Hildenbrand provided the game-tying goal 3:54 into the second period. Hildenbrand was at the top of the crease when Collin Saccoman let a shot go from the left point, and it was redirected up and in by the Waterloo forward. However, a defensive zone turnover allowed Team USA to retake the lead five minutes later when Clayton Keller was left one-on-one with Cale Morris at the top of the crease.
Bellows knocked in a rebound, yielding a key insurance goal 4:36 into the third period. Waterloo couldn't get back within one, and Team USA added two more goals in the final 70 seconds: one by Keller on a power play and the other by Graham McPhee a dozen seconds after the ensuing faceoff.
Next weekend, the Black Hawks are on the road for Friday and Saturday games against the Fargo Force in North Dakota.
