Swift Current Broncos News Release

The Swift Current Broncos gave up three third period goals in a 6-3 road loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

Broncos forward Kaden Elder opened the scoring as the 19-year-old forward took advantage of a puck that bounced off the end boards off a long shot from Connor Horning and he calmly backhanded it home making it 1-0 Swift. Broncos goaltender Stuart Skinner earned an assist on the goal as well.

Washington Capitals prospect Beck Malenstyn made it 2-0 Broncos on a sensational shorthanded rush. Malenstyn went end to end and slid one by the left leg of Wheat Kings netminder Logan Thompson as part of a backhand forehand move.

The 2-0 margin evaporated quickly as the Wheat Kings scored twice over a 1:07 span halfway through the second period with goals from forwards Cole Reinhardt and Evan Weinger.

Tyler Steenbergen scored his 46th goal of the season on a Swift Current power play to direct the Broncos back in front 3-2. For the Sylvan Lake, AB product, the goal marked his 100th point of the season, joining team mates Aleksi Heponiemi and Glenn Gawdin to accomplish the 100-point plateau.

Weinger then tallied his second of the game after skating down the right wing and lifting one over the shoulder of Broncos goaltender Stuart Skinner. The score was 3-3 through 40 minutes of action with shots on goal being 24-22 for Swift Current.

It fell apart in the back half of the third period for the Broncos as Ty Lewis' slap shot on a Wheat Kings man advantage broke a 3-3 tie. The goal came with less than eight minutes left to go in regulation.

Just 26 seconds later, Caiden Daley looped a long pass to Linden McCorrister, setting up a breakaway which led to the Wheat Kings fifth goal.

The Broncos pulled Skinner for the extra attacker with three plus minutes to go in the game but couldn't mustard up any scoring chances but instead, Weinger tallied an empty netter to complete the hat trick and deliver the Broncos a 6-3 loss.

Shots on goal were 33-29 for Brandon. The Broncos power play finished 1/2 while the Wheat Kings went 1/5.

The good news for Swift Current is that the Moose Jaw Warriors also lost on Friday night, falling 6-4 vs. the Prince Albert Raiders, leaving the door open for the Broncos to pass the Warriors for first place in the WHL's East Division standings if they win at Mosaic Place in regulation on Saturday, March 10th. Puck drop for this battle of titans is 7:00pm CT.
