Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (November 3rd) - In their third meeting in the last 10 days, Wichita failed to hold onto a third-period lead on Sunday afternoon losing 3-2 to the Denver Cutthroats at INTRUST Bank Arena. Matt Robinson and RG Flath tallied goals for the Thunder. Wichita's record drops to 1-4-3 on the season. Wichita is 0-2-1 so far this year against the Cutthroats with one more meeting remaining during the regular season.
Carrying over from last weekend, the two teams didn't waste any time as Garrett Gruenke and Daniel Barnes dropped the gloves four seconds into the opening period. Denver was able to take advantage of a penalty assessed to Ryan Hand to grab the first lead of the game. Garett Bembridge scored 15 seconds later on a shot from the left wing circle just 32 seconds into the contest. Wichita answered with a power play goal of its own later in the first period after Troy Schwab was called for tripping. Thomas Beaureguard found Flath at the right hash mark and he buried it past Kent Patterson just 14 seconds into the man advantage to tie the game at one.
In the second period, Wichita was out-shot 7-5 as both teams were stuck in a defensive struggle. With two minutes remaining, Kalvin Sagert found Robinson at the right face-off dot who put Wichita on top for the first time in the game with the other assist given to Nick McParland.
Denver was able to answer in the third period, scoring twice in less than two minutes. Wichita had a chance on one end that Patterson was able to stop. The ensuing rush saw Lee Moffie dish it off to Vincent Arseneau for the game-tying goal at 10:09. Troy Schwab, who played for the Thunder back in 2010-11, scored the eventual game-winner at 11:22. He beat a defender to the left side of the net, fired a turn-around shot from just outside the crease that popped up over Torrie Jung and a fluky bounce ended up in the back of the Thunder cage.
Later in the third, Wichita had a terrific chance when a dump-in ricocheted off the right corner wall to the slot. Patterson was heading to the end boards to stop the puck, but as it caromed between the rings, Travis Wight fired a shot that just missed the net. Wichita pulled Jung late, but couldn't get the equalizer losing 3-2.
Robinson recorded his fifth goal in his last six games and also his 90th in a Thunder uniform. Jon Booras saw his assist and point-streak snapped at six games. Wichita's winless streak is pushed to five and is now 1-3-3 in one-goal contests. Jung took the loss, stopping 19 of 22 shots. Patterson earned the win, stopping 26 of 28 shots.
Both teams went 1-for-2 with the man advantage. Wichita is 6-for-16 on the power play this season in three contests against Denver.
Wichita has a few days off before getting back to action on Wednesday night with its first trip to the BOK Center to take on the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 p.m. The Thunder's next home game is Saturday, November 9th against the Missouri Mavericks.
