Oilers Lose Sixth Straight One-Goal Game

November 3, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - The Oilers held a one-goal lead on four occasions on Saturday night only to watch the Allen Americans surge back and claim a 5-4 victory in front of 4,666 at the BOK Center. The Oilers (0-5-2) have lost six consecutive one-goal games and remain the only winless team in the Central Hockey League.

Tulsa captain Nathan Lutz netted his first goal of the season on a first period power play to give the Oilers the early 1-0 advantage. In what would become a recurring theme of the evening, the Americans didn't take long to respond. After Tyler Ludwig's shot from the point was deflected in front of the Oilers net, rookie forward Alex Lavoie fired the rebound past a sprawling Ross MacKinnon to even the score at the 17:21 mark of the first frame.

Playing in just his second game of the season, Oilers forward Brandon Coccimiglio put his team back in front with one of the more memorable individual efforts of the season. From the side of the Allen net, Coccimiglio scooped a backhand over the shoulder of Americans' goalie Bryan Pitton and underneath the crossbar. Coccimiglio's first of the year and first as an Oiler gave the home side a 2-1 lead. Just 38 seconds later, with the Oilers on a brief power play, Allen defenseman Trevor Ludwig cut to the Tulsa net and slid the puck past MacKinnon to even the score for a second time. Ludwig's tally was the third shorthanded goal given up by Tulsa this season. The Oilers regained the advantage when Ben Gordon finished off a pretty passing exchange with Todd Robinson for his third goal of the season and third goal in as many games at 15:22 of the second period. Once again, the pattern of the night held, and the Americans found the equalizer at 18:13 thanks to Tyler Ludwig's power play slap shot.

Early in the third period, after a furious flurry of chances in front of the Americans' net, Kyle Bochek's shot from the wing found its way through Pitton and the Oilers had their fourth lead of the night at 4-3. The resilient Americans bounced back yet again at 4:44 as Kale Kerbashian's wrister sailed past MacKinnon. Less than two and a half minutes after notching the game-tying goal, Kerbashian took a feed from Lavoie, parted the Oilers defense, and snuck the puck inside the post to give Allen its first lead of the night. Pitton stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced in the third period to preserve the victory for Allen. The Americans (6-0-1) improved to 5-0-0 on the road and 4-0-0 against the Oilers.

Tulsa, winless in its first seven games of the season for the first time in franchise history, dropped to 0-4-0 on home ice. Ben Gordon and Todd Robinson extended their point streaks to four games while Adam Pleskach and Brandon Coccimiglio each finished the night with three points.

The Oilers and Americans face off for the fifth time in eight days on Sunday afternoon in Allen. Puck drop is slated for 4:05 p.m. at the Allen Event Center.
