Portland needs to win on Monday to finish at .500 and playoff hopes alive (New Britain, CT) - The Sea Dogs entered play on Sunday with a 1/2 game lead over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats but dropped a twinbill on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium, 3-2 and 12-3. Portland has dropped six straight road games and fall under .500 to 70-71.
Brock Peterson knocked in the game-winner in the twinbill opener, delivering a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning off Michael Bowden (8-6). In the top of the seventh inning, the Sea Dogs stranded the tying run on second base.
Bowden pitched a complete game but took his sixth loss of the season. The righty allowed five hits and three runs over six innings. Eddie Morlan earned the win for New Britain with two and 1/3 scoreless innings and Armando Gabino picked up the save.
Jay Johnson had two hits for Portland and reached base three times. Trailing 2-0, the 'Dogs scored twice in the top of the fourth inning on RBI's by Andrew Pinckney (double) and John Otness (single).
Peterson delivered the knockout punch very early in game two, blasting a grand slam over the right field wall off Felix Diaz (4-4). The Rock Cats built an 11-0 lead after three innings - Peterson finished with 5 RBI.
In the second inning, Diaz was ejected by home plate umpire John Tumpane after the righty hit Peterson. Tommy Hottovy made his first relief appearance and yielded four hits, three runs over one and 1/3 innings.
The top seven hitters in the lineup for New Britain had at least one RBI. Johnson and Pinckney each homered to account for all three Portland runs.
Jesse Floyd (7-9) pitched a complete game for the Rock Cats, allowing five hits and three runs over seven frames.
Portland is under .500 for the first time since July 9 when they were playing in New Hampshire. The Sea Dogs have now dropped seven of their last eight series.
