Theroux Homers Twice in RockHounds Loss

May 25, 2019 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Our word for the day is "nemesis."

Webster undoubtedly goes into greater detail but the RockHounds can offer a simple two-word definition: Brad Zunica .

The Amarillo first baseman belted a two-run walk-off home run in the last of the ninth Friday night, giving the Sod Poodles a 10-8 win and handing the 'Hounds their four consecutive loss on the current road trip.

The game was a "play in three acts:" The first 7 1/2 innings ... the back-to-back five-run rallies ... and Zunica (see below for the carnage).

The clubs took a 3-3 tie into the last of the eighth when the Sod Poodles scored five times, highlighted by Rodrigo Orozco's two-run single.

The 'Hounds comeback in the ninth started with Collin Theroux's second home run of the game, a two-run drive to left-center. Singles from Edwin Diaz, Kevin Merrell (RBI) and Dairon Blanco reignited the rally and a collection of walks and wild pitches brought in the fourth and fifth runs, tying the game at 8-8.

Luis Torrens singled with one out in the ninth and Zunica came to the plate with two down. He took Angel Duno's first pitch out to deep left-center for a highlight "chapter" in the Amarillo franchise's Inaugural season ... and putting his own baseball definition to "nemesis."

Notable

Through Friday night's game, Brad Zunica is hitting .245, with 10 home runs and 24 RBI. Here's the breakdown:

Versus the RockHounds, he is hitting .405 (15-for-37) with five HR and 11 RBI

Versus the Sod Poodles' other four opponents to date, he is hitting .186 (19-for-102) with five HR and 13 RBI

Frisco defeated the Hooks at Corpus Christi, 7-2, Friday night. The RoughRiders (26-22) lead the Hooks (24-23) by a-game-and-a-half with Amarillo moving past the RockHounds into third in the division. The Sod Poodles (22-24) are three games behind the Riders and the RockHounds (22-25) are now three-and-a-half games back. There are 22 games remaining in the first half pennant race.

Chase Calabuig went hitless for the first time in seven games (0-for-2) but walked three times to extend his on-base streak to 15 games. Chase, who is hitting .281 (.373 on-base percentage) in the 14-gamer, has been on base in 28-of-30 games overall (games with at least one plate appearance). He is hitting .364 (8-for-22) in his last seven games with a .500 OBP.

Luis Barrera went 1-for-5 (single, run) to extend on-base streak to 12 straight games (hits in 11 of them and a .259 average).

Jonah Heim went 2-for-4 (double, RBI). He has hit in four straight, going 6-for-13 with a double, two home runs and six RBI.

Collin Theroux's two-home run game was the RockHounds' second in as many nights (Dairon Blanco Thursday) and makes him the team leader with six HR despite spending the first two weeks of May with (AAA) Las Vegas.

Murphy's Law: One night after losing his 20-game on-base streak, Mikey White went 1-for-4 (run) and, one night after losing a 13-gamer, Edwin Diaz went 2-for-4 (two runs).
