Lancaster Stormers News Release
Anderson Feliz could have been lifted on the shoulders of his Barnstormers' teammates as the newly found hero.
The center fielder singled to left with two outs in the top of the 10th, and Lance Zawadzki avoided James Skelton's lunging tag to produce Lancaster's first run after 46 road innings. That run was enough to send the Barnstormers to a 1-0 victory over the Somerset Patriots, ending a nine-game road losing streak for Lancaster.
Zawadzki led off the 10th with a single chopped to the hole at shortstop and went to second on a wild pitch during Juan Apodaca's at bat. Apodaca would strike out, and Yusuke Kajimoto popped out to bring up Feliz. He took the 1-1 offering from Kyler Newby (4-2) into left. Aharon Eggleston charged the play and fired home, but his throw was slightly behind home, and Zawadzki was able to swipe the front of the plate to score the run.
Lancaster had to sweat the bottom of the 10th. David Vidal spanked a leadoff base hit into right field off Zach Jackson (2-2). Somerset used Nate Spears to pinch run. He moved up on a swinging bunt by Thomas Neal, then stole third. Jackson was able to fan Adam Donachie on a 3-2 pitch then finished the game with a called third strike on Scott Kelly.
For eight innings, Patriots' lefty Matt Zielinski and the Barnstormers' Shunsuke Watanabe matched wits, checking the opponents on just two hits apiece. Kajimoto owned both of Lancaster's, one a bunt in the third inning. Skelton had a single and a double as well as a walk off Watanabe. The only runner to reach third base in the first nine innings was Skelton in the sixth inning, but Watanabe struck out Robert Andino to end the threat.
Each starter walked two. Zielinski hit a batter and struck out eight while Watanabe whiffed seven.
The series concludes on Saturday evening. Lancaster will send Nate Reed (0-2) to the mound for his second straight spot start. Somerset answers with right-hander Lucas Irvine (1-4). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN, rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Watanabe's scoreless streak stands at 20 1/3 innings...Jackson has allowed only one run in his last 12 innings and has struck out 18 batters in his last 10 frames...The Barnstormers still only have one extra base hit (Feliz with a double on Thursday) in these late five away games
