The Aftermath: Storm Wins 10-9 Thriller Over Team USA

KEARNEY, NE. - The Tri-City Storm won a high-scoring thriller of a game by the final score of 10-9 Saturday night at the Viaero Center to complete a two-game weekend sweep of the Under-17 team from the United States National Team Development Program based in Plymouth, Michigan. The Storm's ten goals scored fell one short of the organization's all-time record for most goals netted during a single game. Zach Bade (2), Jake Rozzi, Seth Constance, Alexander Bales, Trevor Connelly, Cam Briere, Owen Beckner, Ryan Smith, and Carmelo Crandell all netted goals for Tri-City in Saturday night's showdown at the Viaero Center. The Storm will return to action on Thursday, January 11th, in a rivalry game against the Lincoln Stars in Kearney. Puck drop for the battle is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.

The opening goal of Saturday's 1st period was scored on the powerplay by Will Moore at 3:56 of the period. The goal was assisted by Donny Brocco and Jack Murtagh. The Storm answered back with a powerplay goal from Jake Rozzi to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Rozzi's goal was his seventh of the season, and second powerplay scoring play of the weekend. The goal was assisted by Ryan Smith and Owen Beckner, and kicked off a run of four straight scoring plays by Tri-City. The Storm's next goal of the 1st period was netted even strength by Seth Constance at 11:16 of the period. Constance's goal was his third of the year, and was assisted by Vladislav Lukashevich and Nick Roukounakis. Roukounakis' assist was his first point of the season following a long stint on the injured reserve. Zach Bade scored his first goal as a member of the Storm at 12:06 of the opening period. Alexander Bales netted his third goal of the year at 13:48 of the period to give the Storm a three-goal lead in the battle. Trevor Connelly recorded an assist on Bales' scoring play. The final goal of Saturday's 1st period was scored by Conrad Fondrk with less than six minutes to play. Fondrk's goal was his sixth of the year, and was assisted by Landon Hafele, and Cole McKinney. The Storm outshot Team USA by a 15-10 margin during Saturday's 1st period. Tri-City began the 2nd period leading by two goals following a high-scoring 1st period.

Team USA and Tri-City combined for an eight-goal 2nd period following a six-goal 1st period in Saturday's game. The first goal of Saturday's 2nd period was netted by L.J. Mooney at 2:30 of the period. The scoring play was Mooney's sixth of the year. Zach Bade netted his second goal of the game, and second goal of the season, eleven seconds after Monney's scoring play to bring the game to a 5-3 score. Carmelo Crandell and Blake Steenerson each recorded an assist on the scoring play. Trevor Connelly netted his eleventh goal of the year at 4:14 of the middle period to give the Storm a three-goal lead in the matchup. Team USA responded with three consecutive goals to tie the game following Connelly's goal. Will Moore netted a goal for the seventh time this season at 4:39 of the 2nd period to bring the Under-17's within two goals of Tri-City's lead. Jack Murtagh recorded the lone assist on the scoring play. Murtagh found the back of the net next for Team USA at 7:24 of the 2nd period to tie the game at 6-6. Murtagh's scoring play was his fourth of the season. Cam Briere gave the Storm a one-goal lead with a powerplay goal at 12:53 of the 2nd period. Artemi Nizameyev notched an assist on the scoring play. The final goal of Saturday's 2nd period was scored by Owen Beckner with less than five minutes to play in the period. Trevor Connelly and Artemi Nizameyev each recorded an assist on the Storm's eighth scoring play of the evening. Each team recorded 12 shots on goal during the 2nd period, and Tri-City carried an 8-6 lead into the 3rd period.

The final period saw the lowest combined goal total of the game between the two teams, five goals. The first goal was netted at 2:48 of the 3rd period by Ryan Smith. Smith's goal was his team-leading thirteenth of the year, and was assisted by Jake Rozzi and Nick Roukounakis. Jack Murtagh netted his second goal of the game, and fifth goal of the season at 3:13 of the final period to bring Team USA back within two goals of Tri-City's lead. Will Horcoff recorded the lone assist on the scoring play. The Storm's final goal of the night was netted by Carmelo Crandell at 8:53 of the 3rd period. Crandell's goal was his second of the season, and was assisted by Seth Constance and Vladislav Lukashevich. The scoring play was the game-winning goal in Saturday's high-scoring contest at the Viaero Center. The final two goals of the contest were scored by Team USA to bring the final score of the game to 10-9. Lincoln Kuehne netted his first goal of the year at 9:54 of the 3rd period. Drew Schock IV and Cole McKinney each notched an assist on the scoring play. The final goal of the night was netted by Charlie Trethewey at 15:31 of the 3rd period. The goal was scored on the powerplay, and was assisted by Donny Bracco. The Storm outshot Team USA 21-13 during the 3rd period, and 48-35 overall in the matchup. Tri-City improved to 15-11-1-2 on the 2023-2024 regular season, and completed a two-game sweep of Team USA.

Cameron Korpi collected his 14th win of the season in net for Tri-City, and improved to 14-6-0-2 on the year. Joey Slavick made 27 saves on 33 shots and recorded the loss in goal for Team USA after entering the game during the 2nd period. Harrison Boettiger made 11 saves on 15 shots during Saturday's 1st period.

The Storm hits the ice again on Thursday, January 11th, in a home game against the Lincoln Stars. Puck drop for the matchup is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.
