Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - A tough loss on Friday night didn't deter the Muskegon Lumberjacks (18-11-1-1, 38 pts.) from picking up a win on Saturday night against the Dubuque Fighting Saints (20-8-1-3, 44 pts.).
Similar to last night the Fighting Saints took an early 1-0 lead, though this time it took them two minutes to find the back of the net. Noah Powell opened the scoring with his 12th goal of the season.
The Jacks responded in a big way with 3 straight goals before the end of the period to carry a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Xavier Veilleux (L'Ancienne-Lorrette, QC, CAN) got the party started by carried the puck into the offensive zone and ripping a shot to the top corner of the net at the 4:08 mark.
Only 40 seconds later the Jacks took a 2-1 lead. Again, Veilleux was involved in the play by taking a shot from the middle of the blue line. Veilleux's shot was blocked by Patrick Raftery (Centennial, CO) who found the puck in his feet and shot it past the netminder. Cody Croal (North Branch, MN) picked up the secondary assist.
Over ten minutes later the Jacks struck again. This time Cameron Aucoin (Chicago, IL) swatted a rebound out of the Jacks zone towards the blue line where Sacha Boisvert (Trois-Riviers, QC, CAN) picked it up. Boisvert carried the puck into the Dubuque end a fired a shot under the glove of the netminder for his team leading 19th goal of the season, and a 4-1 Lumberjacks lead.
Again in the second period the Fighting Saints opened the scoring, and again it was Noah Powell. While on the power play at the 8:43 mark Powell got the puck in the middle of the slot before taking a step towards the net and scoring his second goal of the game.
With just 12 seconds left in the period Muskegon regained their two-goal lead thanks to a goal from Cooper Pierson (Zionsville, IN). A pass down the ice from Bauer Berry (Grand Forks, ND) sprung Pierson onto a zone entry where he used the defenseman as a screen to beat the goalie over his shoulder.
Different from the first two periods the Lumberjacks opened the scoring in the third at the 6:46 mark. Justin Solovey (Holmdel, NJ) found a loose puck in the slot after an offensive zone faceoff win and deposited it into the back of the net for a 5-2 Jacks lead.
Jake Sondreal got the Saints back to within a pair in the final minutes of the game, but Solovey sent a shot from the neutral zone into the back of the net for a shorthanded, empty net goal. His second of the game, 11th of the season.
Shikhabutdin Gadzhiev (Mahkachkala, RUS) (1-1) earned his first career USHL win by making 23 saves on 26 shots sent his way. Thatcher Bernstein (5-4) earned the loss making 22 saves on 27 shots.
