Omaha Lancers News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH. - The Lancers were back inside the Covelli Centre tonight (1/5) for game two of the weekend series with the Youngstown Phantoms. Last night (1/4) the Lancers had themselves a dominant 6-3 victory over the defending Clark Cups Champions and were looking for the sequel tonight before their flight back to Omaha.
The first period picked up with the same grittiness last night ended with. Both teams picking up multiple penalties but end up scoreless through the opening 20 minutes. As Youngstown Goaltender, Colin Winn turned aside eight Omaha shots on goal, and Lancers Netminder, Mikhail Yegorov collected 11 saves on the period.
Omaha opened up the scoring early in the second period with Gabe Kenne picking up his fourth goal of the season off a feed from Will Elger to take a 1-0 lead.
That was followed by Youngstown coming back with two goals unanswered off shots from Ryan Botterill and Adam Pietila. Pietila's goal came on the man-advantage during a five-minute major penalty for roughing that was handed to Lucas Brenna four minutes earlier, to take the game into the second break with the Phantoms up 2-1.
Shots on goal through 40 minutes was 24-18 in favor of Youngstown.
After a massive scrum in the opening minute of the third period leading to Mateo Picozzi and David Posma being tossed from the game, the Lancers were able to refocus and get to work offensively.
Along with outshooting the Phantoms 9-5 in the final period, the Lancers also scored the lone goal.
Cam VanSickle picked up a feed in the offensive zone and sent a wrist shot past the blocker of Winn for the game tying goal with 6:33 remaining in regulation. Tying the game at two goals apiece.
Both squads failed to score in the final minutes of the third period, and in the overtime frame. Bringing the match to a shootout.
It was five rounds of a blank scoreboard. Winn and Yegorov were able to turn away every attempt before Justin Stupka broke the ice in the sixth round. Netting a top-shelf shot over the glove of Winn to put pressure on Miles Gunty to net one in the second half of the round.
Gunty came in fast, looking for a quick snapshot, but Yegorov slammed the door, going 6-for-6 in the shootout session and propelling Omaha to a 3-2 shootout win. Capturing four points on the weekend.
The Lancers will return home for a Thursday night game on January 11th, for a 7:05PM CST. puck drop at Liberty First Credit Union Arena with the Sioux City Musketeers. That game can be caught on Mixlr and FloSports.
