January 6, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Lincoln Stars outshined the Waterloo Black Hawks thanks to a pair of second period goals Saturday at the Ice Box.

The middle period scoring put Lincoln ahead for good after Waterloo had rebounded from a pair of one-goal deficits in the first. Saturday's loss halted a four-game Hawks winning streak.

Dashel Oliver had scored the game's first goal 3:19 into the action, rushing down left wing before pinpointing a shot in the opposite top corner. Grady Deering answered for Waterloo at 8:54. Looking as though he would step behind the net, he made a late backhanded attempt for the short side post and squeezed a chance between Yan Shostak and the pipe.

Less than a minute later, Lincoln went back in front again at 9:47. Blake Montgomery's goal in transition came from nearly the same spot as Oliver's earlier in the period. Teddy Townsend tallied the equalizer at 16:45; coming into the offensive zone on a change, Gavin Lindberg found Townsend in stride, and the first year forward planted a wrister just inside the post.

Lincoln did all the scoring in the second period. Justin Mexico gave the Stars a new lead at 5:43, positioned in the slot to benefit when the puck came his was after an initial shot by Ethan Weber. The Stars built the lead further at 10:10. Max Ferkodic triggered a chance from the left point which found its way through traffic.

The Stars added one more in the third at 11:30. With a pass coming across the slot, Mexico swatted in his second of the game.

John Mustard brought Waterloo back to within two goals with 5:45 remaining. Reid Morich dug a puck off the end wall, centering it to the Hawks' leading scorer. Mustard finished the setup from near the edge of the crease. Waterloo played with a sixth attacker for the last three-and-a-half minutes but could not whittle any closer.

The Black Hawks get back to home ice next Friday against the Chicago Steel. The 7:05 p.m. game is the next Family 4-Pack Night; the $64 package includes four tickets, four chuck-a-pucks, and $32 worth of concession vouchers which can be redeemed for food and beverages during the game.
