Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN)- A three-run homerun from Tucker Tharp (Kansas) in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Rochester Honkers to a 6-5 thrilling come from behind win over the Alexandria Blue Anchors Sunday afternoon at Mayo Field in Rochester, MN. The win was the first time this season where the Honkers came from behind to win.
Alexandria took advantage of a pair of Honker errors in the top half of the first inning to jump ahead to an early 2-0 lead. The 2-0 score lasted until the top of the sixth inning, when the Blue Anchors scored a third unearned run off of Rochester starting pitcher Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State.) Spitzack pitched six innings without an earned run and just four hits in his first appearance of the season.
Steve Serratore (Des Moines Area Community College) led off the bottom half of the sixth inning with a homerun over the right center field fence to cut the deficit to 3-1. The homerun was the first of the season for the Honkers. Alexandria second baseman Dalton Leuschke committed two errors to load the bases with no outs. Blue Anchors starter Colin Wendinger retired Tharp and Toby Thomas (Pensacola State,) but Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) delivered with a two-run single to tie the score at 3 after six innings. Wendinger took a no decision, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits in 5.2 innings.
Hayden Edwards (Kansas) entered the game for the Honkers. He allowed a solo homerun to Kris Goodman on just his second pitch and the Blue Anchors took the lead at 4-3. Edwards was the eventual winning pitcher. He allowed the one run in two innings.
Tyler Krekling (Riverland Community College) and Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) drew consecutive one-out walks in the bottom of the seventh to set up Tharp's three-run homerun over the left the field fence. Tharp led the Honkers with a second consecutive game with three RBI and at least two hits.
Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) entered the game in the ninth inning to earn the save. It did not come easy, though. Alexandria scored one run and had the tying run at first base when Hanawahine made a diving grab in the right field corner to record the final out and prevent the tying run to score.
Rochester (4-1) will host Willmar Monday June, 3 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Jon Woodcock (1-0) is the expected starter for the Honkers.
