
Blue Anchors Lose Two Close Games in Rochester

The Alexandria Blue Anchors lost a couple of close games to Rochester over the weekend.
Game 1 (June 1st)
Alexandria made a late rally against Rochester on June 1st, but it wasn't enough as the Anchors fell 7-6 to the Honkers in front of a crowd of 674 at Mayo Field.
Alexandria struggled in the first 3 innings, only scoring one run while giving up four. However, the Anchors responded with three big runs in the 4th. Jamie Ritchie (Belmont) advanced to third on errors, and was driving in on a Jake Bergren (Minnesota) sacrifice fly. Then, after Aaron Overbeck (Des Moines Area Community College) singled, Andrew Mulato (Michigan State) tied the game up with his first home run of the season. However, Rochester would answer with three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead.
It would stay that way until the ninth inning, when the Blue Anchors made a rally.It started with singles by Kris Goodman (Iowa) and Andrew Sohn (Western Michigan). Then, after Aaron Gretz (Ohio State) drew a walk, Scott Sanderson (St. Cloud State) came in to pinch run. Goodman scored on a wild pitch, and Sohn would score on a Ritchie fielder's choice to make it a one-run game. Unfortunately, the Blue Anchors could not finish the rally.
Andy Johnson (Bradley, 0-1) took the loss, giving up all 7 Rochester runs in 4 innings. Johnson did strike out 7 in his performance. Ross Slaney (San Jose State) and Ty Walker (Abilene Christian) each pitched 2 innings in relief.
Mason Pingel (Western Illinois, 1-0) picked up the win for Rochester, with Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) picked up his second save.
Game 2 (June 2nd)
Alexandria mounted another 9th inning rally, but it wasn't enough, as they fell 6-5 to Rochester in from of a crowd of 620 at Mayo Field on Sunday.
As oppossed to Saturday's start, the Blue Anchors started off hot, picking up two runs in the top of the 1st. Andrew Sohn scored on an Aaron Overbeck single, and Jake Bregren drove in Tim Cusick (Dakota Wesleyan) with a single on the next pitch.
It would remain 2-0 until the 6th, when Overbeck scored on a Andrew Mulato sacrifice fly. However, the Honkers would respond with three runs in the bottom of the 6th to make it a tie game. Kris Goodman crushed a 0-1 pitch for a 4-3 Blue Anchors lead, but the Honkers put up three more in the bottom of the 7th for a 6-4 lead.
It stayed that way until the ninth, when the Anchors mounted another rally. Goodman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after two outs, Goodman moved to 3rd on a stolen base and an error by the catcher. Albert Baur (Newberry College) then drove in Goodman on a single to left field. But the Anchors could not put the tying run across the plate, and fell again.
Zac Custer (Dakota Wesleyan, 0-1) took the loss, giving up 3 runs in 1.1 innings. Hayeden Edwards (Kansas, 1-0) picked up the win for Rochester, with Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) picking up his first save of the season.
A bright spot in the game was the start by Blue Anchors pitcher Colin Wendinger, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in 5.2 innings. Sohn also continued his hot streak on the basepaths, stealing his 6th base of the season.
The Blue Anchors now hit the road for a two-game set in Waterloo, starting Monday at 6:35pm.
