Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release

LA CROSSE, WI- The La Crosse Loggers (3-2) beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (2-2) Sunday evening, 10-3. The Loggers combined to club 10 hits, while holding the Rafters offense to two hits through the first eight innings. California Golden Bear freshman and La Crosse ace, Colin Monsour, tossed six shutout innings, scattering two hits and striking out three.

The La Crosse attack took off in the first inning after Rafters starter, Bradon Winfield walked the leadoff man, Eric Toole, on four-straight pitches. Logger's centerfielder, Johnny Bukakis, followed with a single up the middle advancing Toole from first to second. With runners at first and second and one out, Iowa Hawkeye, Nick Day, stepped to the plated and stroked a bouncing ball down the right field that was ruled a fair ball. Day would reach third on the play and was credited with 2 RBI, giving the Loggers the lead, 2-1. La Crosse added to the lead as catcher, Matt Risdon, recoded a sacrifice fly, scoring Day from third base extending the La Crosse lead, 3-0.

The Loggers added seven more runs throughout the final seven innings as Dexter Pierce and third-year Logger, Bobby June, added solo home runs to leadoff the second and eighth innings. June's home run was part of a four-run fourth inning for the defending Northwoods League champions.

The lone bright spot of the game for the Rafters, batting in the top of the ninth inning, plated three runs on three hits. Rafters designated hitter, Michael Herman, led off the ninth by taking his second base on ball of the game. Wisconsin Rapids native, and Rafters second basemen, Riley Spetz, then followed by recording his first hit of the year, out hustling an infield single that split between the pitcher, Nick Piscotty, and Loggers third baseman, Day. Spetz' single ended a 0-10 slump for the UW-Stevens Point product. Erik Payne then followed with a two-RBI double to deep centerfield, plating Herman and Spetz all the way from first and second base. The RBI was Payne's fifth and sixth of the season and scored the Rafters first runs of the game.

Phoenix native, Marcus Wheeler, followed a Taylor Stell walk, blasting an RBI double off the right field wall to give Rafters their final run of the game and making the score, 10-3.

The Rafters will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they face the Loggers in a 7:05 p.m. tilt at Copeland Park. The Rafters will send right-handed pitcher, Brad Stroik to the mound. Fans can listen to tomorrow's game on 1320 AM WFHR, with the pregame show starting at 6:50 p.m.
