Thames Blasts Two-Run HR In 4-2 Loss To Mets
April 25, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Binghamton, NY-Eric Thamessmashed a two-run home run, and Eastern League stolen base leader Darin Mastroianniswiped two more bases -improving to a perfect 11-for-11 on the season- but the Binghamton Mets salvaged a split of the four-game weekend series with a 4-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at NYSEG Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Mastroianni (2-for-4, R, 2 SB) led off the game with a single, stole second and scored when Thames (1-for-3, HR, BB, 2 RBI) belted a towering two-run shot off Mets starter Scott Shaw, staking the Fisher Cats (10-7) to a 2-0 lead.
Shaw (3-0) would shake that off to post his second win against New Hampshire and his third win of the season. The right-hander went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Binghamton (10-8) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when D.J. Wabick (2-for-4, 2 2B, R) doubled off Randy Boone and scored on a fielding error charged to second baseman Callix Crabbe, cutting the Fisher Cats' lead to 2-1.
The Mets tied the game, 2-2, against Boone in the third on an RBI ground out by Nick Evans (0-for-2, RBI) that scored Brahaim Maldonado, who led off the inning with a single.
In the fifth, Maldonado (1-for-2, BB, 2 R) drew a leadoff walk, went to third on a hit-and-run single by Jonathan Malo (2-for-3) and came across with the go-ahead run on a double-play, making it 3-2 in favor of the Mets.
Boone (1-2) suffered his second straight loss by permitting three runs -two earned- on four hits in five innings. The righty fanned two and walked two.
The Fisher Cats threatened in the top of the eighth against reliever Roy Merrit when Mastroianni led off with a single, stole second base and took third on a throwing error by catcher Luke Montz. Merrit would wiggle off the hook, however, when Al Quintana grounded out and David Cooper flied into an inning-ending double play to left, with Malo throwing out Mastroianni attempting to tag and score on the play.
Merrit pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit ball, striking out one, to record his second save.
Danny Farquhar allowed his first run of the year in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Lucas Duda (1-for-3, BB, RBI) that plated Kirk Nieuwenhuis (1-for-4, SB, R), who led off with a single, stole second and took third on Jose Coronado's bunt single, giving the B-Mets a 4-2 lead.
New Hampshire has an off day Monday before embarking on a three-game series in Trenton beginning Tuesday night at 7:05pm. Right-hander Zach Stewart (1-1, 7.71) will get the start against Thunder righty David Phelps (2-0, 0.77). Radio coverage begins with Fisher Cats Pre-Game at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday, April 30, to open a three-game series against the Reading Phillies at 6:35pm. An Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game. For tickets and more information, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
