Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - A six-run third inning by Erie helped catapult the SeaWolves to a, 10-3, victory over Altoona on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark. Jared Hughes (3-1) suffers his first loss of the season while L.J. Gagnier (2-0) earned his second win of the season.

Hughes started out well for Altoona, setting the SeaWolves down in order in the first. Erie broke on to the scoreboard in the second, however, as Max St. Pierre grounded out to short to drive in Cesar Nicolas for the first run of the game. Cale Iorg batted next and singled back through the middle to drive in Audy Ciriaco and Erie was out to a, 2-0, lead.

The SeaWolves then went to work against Hughes in the third as they sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs on six hits in the frame. Hughes was removed after 2.2 innings and ended up allowing eight runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Tony Watson came on in relief to finish the inning for Hughes.

With the score at 9-0 after a Wilkin Ramirez solo home run in the top of the fourth, Altoona plated a pair of runs to pull within seven in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Hague reached on a walk to start the inning and also run his consecutive-games-on-base streak to 13 games. Jordy Mercer then reached on a two-error play by the third baseman Ciriaco to put two on with no one out.

Kris Watts singled into left-center field to score Hague from third and also score Mercer from first as the center fielder Wilkin Ramirez committed the third SeaWolves error of the inning when he let the ball get by him and roll all the way to the wall.

Altoona added a run in the ninth on a one-out double by Miles Durham to end the scoring.

Watts finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI while Alex Presley extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his single in the first. Watson ended up throwing 3.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits (both solo home runs). Michael Dubee worked the final three innings and gave up just one hit.

The Curve (11-6) will open a three-game series with Akron beginning Monday at 6:30 p.m. from BCB. It will be a rematch of the last game in Akron with RHP Tim Alderson (1-0, 5.52) starting for Altoona and RHP Paolo Espino (1-0, 6.46) starting for Akron.

It's a Mirror Monday at the ballpark on Monday night. Fans should check the front page of the sports section of the Altoona Mirror for special offers on tickets for Monday night's contest. Radio coverage begins at 6 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network.
