B-Mets Salvage Series With Wet 4-2 Win

Righty Scott Shaw tossed a season-best 6 2/3 innings to lead the B-Mets past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4-2 in rainy conditions at NYSEG Stadium Sunday afternoon. Shaw's outing marked the deepest a Binghamton starter has gone in a game in 2010. In addition, D.J. Wabick ripped two doubles and scored a run to extend his season-long hitting streak to six games.

For the fourth straight game in the series, Binghamton (10-8) found itself in an early hole. After allowing a single to Darin Mastroianni to lead off the inning, Shaw sat down the next two before running into Eric Thames. Thames ripped a 1-2 offering from the 23-year-old righty over the wall in right for a two-run homer to put New Hampshire (10-7) on top 2-0. That was all the Fisher Cats would get, however.

The B-Mets fought back with a run in the second courtesy of a Callix Crabbe error. Wabick doubled to left off starter Randy Boone with one out to get into scoring position. Luis Hernandez followed with a slow roller to second that Crabbe charged but misplayed as the ball slid under his glove, scoring Wabick from second.

In the third, Brahaim Maldonado singled through the left side of the infield to lead things off. Jonathan Malo joined him on base with a single of his own. After Kirk Nieuwenhuis moved the runners up with a groundout to the right side, Nick Evans drove home Maldonado with a groundout to second tying the score.

The bottom of the order came through again in the fifth inning to put Binghamton in the driver's seat. Boone walked Maldonado to get the inning started. On a hit-and-run, Malo singled through the hole on the right side to advance Maldonado to third. Nieuwenhuis followed with a double-play grounder to second that pushed Maldonado across, making it 3-2.

Boone exited after the fifth and was eventually hung with the loss. The Austin, Texas native allowed three runs, two earned, over five innings, walked two and struck out two.

Shaw was serenaded by raucous applause from the NYSEG Stadium faithful upon his exit in the seventh inning after allowing back-to-back singles with two outs. Shaw handed the ball to Roy Merritt who would take it the final 2 1/3 innings for his second save in three chances.

Binghamton added an insurance run against Fisher Cats' closer Danny Farquhar in the eighth inning with three straight singles, capped off by Lucas Duda's RBI single past Crabbe at second. The RBI was Duda's Eastern League-leading 18th of the year. The run was the first allowed by Farquhar to date this season.

The win gets the B-Mets within a half game of the Eastern League East-leading Fisher Cats. Binghamton welcomes the Portland Sea Dogs to town Monday night at 6:35 PM for the first of three games. The B-Mets took two of three from the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field April 19-21. LHP Mike Antonini (2-1, 6.28) will start for the fourth time this season and for the second consecutive game against Portland. The Sea Dogs counter with RHP Ryne Miller (0-1, 6.92). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
