Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
READING, PA - Reading starter Phillippe Aumont no-hit the Flying Squirrels for six innings as the Phillies blanked Richmond 2-0 on one hit in the series finale at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the R-Phils claimed the series, taking two of the three games over the weekend.
A fielding error opened the door for the R-Phils in the first inning, as they broke on top against Squirrels' starter Clayton Tanner. Second baseman Nick Noonan threw wide of the bag on a ground-ball from Freddy Galvis with one down in the inning, allowing Galvis to reach. He took second on another ground-ball to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Tanner. Michael Spidale then delivered the lead to Reading with a hot-shot to third, which glanced off the mitt of Conor Gillaspie for an infield-single, and brought home Galvis for a 1-0 lead.
As Tanner (1-2) labored in the early going, Aumont was in control. He breezed through four perfect innings at the outset, striking out three and taking a perfect game bid into the fifth inning. He lost the bid for a perfect game by walking Conor Gillaspie to open the fifth inning, but took care of Gillaspie with a double-play ball off the bat of Michael Ambort. He faced the minimum through five innings, taking a no-hit bid into the sixth.
Aumont continued with the no-hit bid through six innings, but then retired for the day, reaching his pitch count. Chance Chapman entered in relief and recorded the first two outs in succession in the seventh. With two outs, Gillaspie rolled a single through the right side of the infield.to break up the no-hit bid, but Chapman worked through the inning without allowing Richmond to tie the game. Aumont (1-1) earned his first victory of the season, allowing no hits or runs in six innings, walking two and striking out four.
Reading doubled their lead with a run off of reliever Andy Sisco in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sisco walked Galvis with one out, and Dominic Brown promptly brought him home for a 2-0 advantage with a triple down the right field line.
Right-hander Michael Schwimer worked the final two innings for Reading, walking the first two batters in the eighth inning, but working around trouble and not allowing any hits as he earned his second save of the season.
Richmond is scheduled to open a three-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium on Monday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Daryl Maday (2-0, 0.96) will make the start for the Flying Squirrels against RHP Mike McCardell (0-1, 4.60) for the Rock Cats.
