Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, TX - Texas Stars goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp recorded the win in his first professional game in North America, making 18 saves in a 4-1 victory over in-state rival San Antonio Rampage Friday night at the Cedar Park Center.
Texas' special teams picked up right where they left off from Wednesday night's preseason win over Houston as Tomas Vincour slapped a loose puck in front over the shoulder of Rampage netminder Dov Grumet-Morris for a power play goal at 14:31. Maxime Fortunus and Cody Eakin were credited with assists on the play.
The Stars did not take long to increase their lead in the second period as Francis Wathier scored his third goal of the preseason at 1:12. Wathier took a crossing feed from Toby Petersen and blazed a wrist shot past the stick side of Grumet-Morris. Rookie right wing Alex Chiasson made it 3-0 Texas at the 12:34 mark by redirecting a clever centering pass from Taylor Vause during an odd-man rush.
Later in the second period, a high sticking call on Rampage forward Jared Gomes, followed by a closing-the-hand-on-the-puck penalty on San Antonio's John Lee, put the Stars on a 5-on-3 power play. Brenden Dillon scored the second power play goal of the night at 18:33, blasting a one-timer past Grumet-Morris for a 4-0 lead; assisted by Petersen and Travis Morin.
Nilstorp appeared strong in the net for Texas, with his only blemish coming late in the third period. Drew Shore put San Antonio on the board at the 15:23 mark with a power play goal, after Wathier was sent to the box for goaltender interference.
Cristopher Nilstorp earned the victory as he stopped 18-of-19 shots in goal for the Stars, while Dov Grumet-Morris finished with 24 saves on 28 shots for San Antonio. Texas went 2-for-8 on the power play and outshot the Rampage 24-19. San Antonio was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
The Texas Stars continue their preseason schedule on Saturday, October 6, as they travel to San Antonio on Saturday, October 6th for a 4:00 pm game at the Ice & Golf Center at Northwoods.
The Stars open the 2012-13 AHL season on Saturday, October 13th at San Antonio and their home opener comes on Sunday, October 14th as they host the Charlotte Checkers for a 7:00 pm faceoff at Cedar Park Center. 2012-13 season seat packages are on sale now.
