Syracuse Crunch News Release
Stephenville, Newfoundland - The Syracuse Crunch overcame a two goal deficit to defeat the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 in a shootout tonight at the Stephenville Dome.
The St. John's IceCaps got on the board first with a power-play goal late in the first period. Left wing Hunter Tremblay scored with just one second remaining on a five-on-three power play. St. John's was on the man-advantage thanks to a holding the stick penalty to Mike Angelidis and a tripping call on Brett Connolly.
The Crunch and IceCaps traded goals in the second period. Carl Klingberg extended the St. John's lead to 2-0 just 1:03 into the second period. The Crunch responded with a goal from Brett Connolly with 12:36 to play in the second stanza. Connolly beat St. John's goaltender Eddie Pasquale with a shot high, on the blocker side.
Matt Taormina tied the game with 8:59 to play in regulation when he batted the puck out of the air and past Pasquale to make it 3-3 and send the game to overtime. The game went to a shootout after neither team could score in the extra session.
Ondrej Palat, Connolly and Tyler Johnson scored in the shootout and Crunch netminder Riku Helenius turned aside three St. John's shooters to give the Crunch a 3-2 victory.
The Crunch and IceCaps will meet again for the final game of this three game series on Sunday afternoon in Clarenville, Newfoundland. Puck drops at 12:30 p.m. eastern time.
The Crunch will travel to Rochester on Oct. 12 to start the regular season and host the Hershey Bears on Oct. 13 at the War Memorial.
