Tennessee Gets Best of Carolina 2-1

Zebulon, NC --- The Tennessee Smokies scored a run apiece in the first two innings and then held off the Carolina Mudcats 2-1 at Five County Stadium on Monday night.

Rebel Ridling singled home Marwin Gonzalez with two outs in the first, and Brett Jackson hit a sac fly against Tim Gustafson (L, 0-3) in the second to provide the Smokies (41-24) a 2-0 lead.

Carolina (19-46) built up an inning in the seventh, with Felix Perez doubling followed by a walk to Denis Phipps ahead of a sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Eric Campell lofted a shallow flyball to left field with Ryan Flaherty throwing out Perez at home plate to end the inning. Carolina finally scratched across a run in the eighth with Quintin Berry scoring on a double play grounder hit by Mike Costanzo, but the Mudcats could get no closer.

The Smokies outhit the Mudcats 12-6 and won the series 4-1. The Smokies lowered their magic number to clinching the Northern Division to two over the Jackson Generals.

Gustafson allowed just two runs on seven hits over six innings, striking out three. Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth, fanning three.

Robert Coello (W, 1-2) pitched six scoreless innings to earn the victory. Rafael Dolis (S, 7) threw a scoreless ninth to record the save.

Tuesday is a travel day for the Mudcats, who open their final series of the first half against the second place Generals at 8:05 PM ET at Pringles Park.
