HOOVER, Ala. - On Monday night at Regions Park, the BayBears saw their chances of a first half division title take a big blow in a 2-1 loss to the Birmingham Barons as the BayBears dropped their fourth consecutive contest.

Scoreless for 24 consecutive innings, the BayBears (36-29) were given a momentous lift from right fielder Marc Krauss, who blasted his 10th home run of the season off Birmingham (38-26) closer Dan Remenowsky (4-1) in the top of the ninth, tying the contest at 1-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Barons got that run right back. Brandon Short singled to lead off against reliever Mike DeMark (0-1) and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Christian Marrero. After Josh Phegley popped out, Alden Carrtihers was intentionally walked while Seth Loman came off the bench to bat for Kyle Shelton, and Loman delivered a two-strike single past Dan Kaczrowski at third, scoring Short with the game-winner.

Wade Miley started for the BayBears and worked eight gutsy innings while retiring the last 17 hitters he faced. His only blemish came in the third when the Barons grabbed the lead on a wild pitch from Miley that scored Kenny Williams, Jr.

Lefty Charlie Leesman punished the BayBears with six shutout innings as he only surrendered one hit while striking out seven. The BayBears finished the series by going 1-for-35 with runners in scoring position as they are now 2.5 games behind the Barons for first place with only five contests remaining in the half.

The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday to battle the Montgomery Biscuits at 12:05 p.m., beginning the final series of the first half. All-Star lefty Patrick Corbin (6-2) starts for the BayBears against right-hander Nick Barnese (2-2).
