Oshawa Generals News Release

Tonight was the 17th Annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Meineke Car Care in support of Durham Children's Aid Foundation. The Generals took on the Niagara IceDogs for the second time this season. The Generals broke their Teddy Bear Toss record with a total of 6072 collected. Although the Generals fell short tonight, with a final score of 4-1, the spirit of the game was still strong.

The first few minutes of the game were tense as the crowd patiently waited for the first goal. With Kenny Appleby in the net tonight for the Generals, he made a huge save on Cody Caron early on. The first penalty came just over seven minutes in when Verhaeghe sat for tripping. The Generals showed once again their strength on the power play and took advantage of the five on four. Michael Dal Colle managed to trigger the teddy bear tossing for the second year in the row. Bradley Latour and Tobias Lindberg assisted Dal Colle's power play goal. The mayhem began with over 6,000 teddy bears thrown on the ice. After the teddy bear clean up, the Generals went back to work, but this time Niagara got the power play with Josh Brown in the penalty box for hooking. The power play didn't last long after Vince Dunn of Niagara sat for interference. Another two penalties to both Desrocher and Cirelli, gave Niagara a couple chances but they were not able to get on the board this period. Oshawa had some good scoring chances with 15 shots on net compared to their opponents who only managed to get eight shots on Appleby.

The second period started with the IceDogs on a penalty for only 33 seconds. The Generals killed it off successfully but it wasn't long until another penalty was called. At only 47 seconds into the second, Sterk and Haydon both sat for two, Sterk with an unsportsmanlike conduct call and Haydon with a check from behind call. The four on four ended quickly and only minutes later, Sterk was back in the penalty box, this time for hooking. The IceDogs capitalized on the power play and put one past Appleby at 6:08. The goal was scored by DiFruscia, assisted by Verhaeghe and Ho-Sang. With DiFruscia in the box at 8:34 for a check to the head, the Generals were looking for another goal but couldn't put any past IceDogs goaltender, Brandon Hope. With less than a minute remaining in the period, Chris Carlisle was called for interference, putting the IceDogs on their fifth powerplay of the night. On the powerplay, there was a big scramble in front of the Generals net but Brown, Petschenig, and Harding worked to ensure no goals were scored. The second period came to a close with the IceDogs outshooting the Generals 12-5. Despite a few heavy hits from the Generals this period, the team couldn't seem to find their groove.

The third period opened with the IceDogs on a powerplay, but the Generals . Around the six minute mark, the Generals had a great scoring opportunity and after a mess in front of the net, Caron seemed to lift the net off of its posts to avoid a goal. Caron was sent to the penalty box for two on a delay of game call. The Generals had several scoring chances through the period, but Hope shut down the Generals chances. At 8:53, Aagaard scored the second IceDogs goal of the night, giving Niagara a 2-1 lead. The goal was assisted by Knott and Ho-Sang. With only minutes remaining in the game, Caron was on a breakaway but Kenny Appleby shut him down with a glove save, keeping the Gens in the game. In a last effort to score, the Generals pulled Appleby, but Verhaeghe managed to score two additional goals for the IceDogs, bringing the final score to 4-1 for the IceDogs. The Generals outshot the IceDogs 35-27.

Tonight marks only the second time that the Generals have lost on home ice this season. Despite the loss, this game showed the spirit of our fans and the Generals community who have made an amazing addition to the lives of many children in need this Christmas with all of the teddy bears collected tonight.
