Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors pulled off more late game heroics Wednesday night, downing Reno 101-96 at the Kaiser Permanente Arena after battling back from a 47-43 halftime deficit.
Santa Cruz had five players in double figures. The Warriors were led by Stefhon Hannah, who scored 14 points in the first half and ended the night with a game-high 21 points and seven assists. Cameron Jones ignited the second-half surge for Santa Cruz, connecting on three consecutive treys from long range and ending the game with 13 points. Daniel Nwaelele finished with 16 points, including 3-of-5 from distance. Darington Hobson logged 18 points and nine rebounds.
Reno was paced by Samardo Samuels, who scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Ronald Dupree added 22 points and 13 rebounds off the bench, and Marcus Landry chipped in with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Landry nailed a last-ditch effort three-pointer with 12 seconds left in the game, but the Warriors were able to hang on for the five-point victory.
Down 75-67 after three quarters, Santa Cruz used a 13-4 run to start the fourth quarter to take a one point lead, up 80-79 with 7:09 left in the game. After a Daniel Nwaelele three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter put the Warriors up 83-81, Santa Cruz never trailed. The Warriors poured in a season-high 34 points in the final frame.
The Warriors, despite the comeback, were outrebounded by the Bighorns (59-47), but held Reno to 32.9% shooting from the field. Santa Cruz shot 43.7% from the floor. The Warriors recorded a combined 26 assists, nine more than Reno's 17.
The Warriors will tip-off against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. for UC Santa Cruz Night at the Kaiser Permanente Arena. Fans can listen to the broadcast on the Santa Cruz Warriors flagship station, KION 1460AM/101.1FM, watch the game on KAXT-1 in the Bay Area or KOTR My11 in the Santa Cruz area, or stream it online through the NBA D-League's YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/nbadleague.
