Team Black Earns Shootout Win in Entertaining Rebels Intrasquad Game

August 31, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Red Deer Rebels News Release

The Red Deer Rebels 2019 training camp was a fast-paced affair and the camp-ending Black and White intrasquad game Saturday at the Centrium was no exception.

"That's one of the better Black and White games that we've had," Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter said of the entertaining affair witnessed by roughly 600 fans.

A late goal by incoming rookie defenceman and Team Black member Kyle Masters with 40 seconds left in the third period tied the game at three and the Black squad prevailed 4-3 in a shootout.

"Basically (the game) was what the whole camp has been like," said Sutter. "It's been up tempo, it's been lively . . . lots of energy through camp.

"Our veteran players all played well again today and our young kids were all good. That's what makes it good, there's not a big separation. Just the whole camp has been good and this game kind of sums up what camp's been like."

Team White opened the scoring when Blake Sydlowski buried a centering pass from Keaton Sorensen at 11:48 of the first period. Cam Hausinger replied for Team Black before the period expired, beating netminder Ethan Anders from the edge of the crease.

The White squad opened a 3-1 lead in the middle frame as 15-year-old defenceman Hunter Mayo scored on a backhand at 7:08 from in tight and Chris Douglas connected at the midway mark of the period.

Braden Fischer pulled Team Black within one early in the third when he zipped down the left side and fired a wrist shot past goaltender Chase Coward, setting the stage for Masters' late marker, a point shot that found its way through a crowd.

Following a scoreless overtime, each team employed nine players in the ensuring shootout, with Jordan Borysiuk's marker emerging as the winner.

Team Black also got shootout goals from Hausinger, Zak Smith and Ethan Rowland, while Parker Lalonde, 15, Sorensen and Josh Tarzwell replied for Team White.

Byron Fancy turned aside 13 of the 15 shots he faced in the Team Black goal, with Eric Ward stopping 17 of 18 during the second half of the game.

For Team White, Anders blocked 13 of 14 shots and Coward made nine saves on 11 shots.

Dawson Barteaux was sporting the captain's 'C' on the Team White blueline and will be the Rebels' official on-ice leader during the upcoming WHL season.

Hausinger, Brett Davis and defenceman Ethan Sakowich, all 20, were also wearing letters Saturday and will serve as the team's assistant captains in 2019-20.

"We just wanted some time to make sure we thought it through and selected the right assistant captains," said Sutter.

"When you dissect it all, Sak has been a good leader for us through the time he's been here and Hauser and Davey were wearing letters (with the Kootenay Ice) when we traded for them last year.

"They're all experienced players, good guys, guys who are respected in the dressing room. We just felt that with a young team it's probably best to have our three 20-year-olds be guys who can hopefully be a reflection of the coaching staff and help the kids grow and develop, and at the same time play the game the right way and help us try and win hockey games."

Following the contest, Sutter reassigned eight players - 16-year-olds Hunter Brown, Coward, Jeremy Hancock and Connor Poppenroth, 15-year-olds Lalonde, Declan Cosford and Jhett Larson, and Fischer, who turns 17 in October.

With the moves, the Rebels have 33 players on their roster and 20 will dress for Tuesday's preseason opener versus the host Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Rebels will take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes Friday at the Centrium.
