Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Jose Taveras threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and no walks, in leading the BlueClaws to a 4-1 in over Kannapolis on Monday night at CMC Northeast Stadium.
The win puts the BlueClaws at 10-20 on the year and 3-3 on their seven game trip. Kannapolis, who won the first two games in the four-game set, falls to 15-16 on the season.
Taveras, who allowed only two base-runners, retired the last 13 hitters, and 20 of the last 21 hitters to face him. He earned the win in his second start of the year after making five relief appearances prior to moving into the starting rotation.
The BlueClaws opened the scoring in the third on an RBI groundout by Josh Tobias. They added two more in the fourth, scoring on a Jiandido Tromp RBI single and a SAC fly by Venn Biter.
Then in the fifth, Lakewood added another run on a wild pitch thrown by reliever Ryan Riga to score Jose Pujols. Pujols' run, and all four BlueClaws runs, were charged to starter Luis Martinez who came out of the game after 4.2 innings of work.
Kannapolis got a run in the eighth off Zach Morris, who walked in a run to make it 4-1. Robert Tasin then came in with the bases loaded to strike out Corey Zangari and preserve the lead. Tasin then threw a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save.
Jose Pujols and Jiandido Tromp each had two hits for the BlueClaws. Wilson Garcia extended his hitting streak to 10 on a seventh inning single, though he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
The teams finish their four-game series on Tuesday night at CMC Northeast Stadium. LHP Tyler Gilbert (0-3, 5.61) starts for Lakewood against RHP Chris Comito (0-1, 16.88).
