Keller Gets Power back on Track
May 9, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV)- The West Virginia Power snapped a four game losing streak as they defeated the Hagerstown Suns 4-0 Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. Reigning South Atlantic League Player-of-the-Month Mitch Keller threw six shutout innings, leading the Power to their first win of the series.
The Power took an early lead against Hagerstown starter Matthew DeRosier in the first inning. Tito Polo led off with a single, and Ke'Bryan Hayes doubled him home with a liner into the left field corner. One batter later Carlos Munoz knocked a single to center to plate Hayes and expand the lead to 2-0.
West Virginia added a single run in the third when Ty Moore hit a one out double and then came around to score after two wild pitches from DeRosier. In the fourth the Power tallied their final run, as Cole Tucker led off with a double against the left field wall, and scored on a Munoz sacrifice fly to give the Power a 4-0 lead.
That lead would prove plenty for Keller, who surrendered just two hits and a walk across six shutout innings while striking out eight. The Suns' only hits came on a bunt single and a ground ball single into center. The start lowered Keller's season ERA to 0.79, second best in the SAL. Keller has held the opposition scoreless in four of his six starts this season and it's the third time he has limited opponents to two hits or less.
DeRosier (1-1) took the loss, giving up four runs and five hits over five innings.
After Daniel Zamora pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Keller, Julio Eusebio retired the Suns in order in the ninth to close out the 4-0 shutout victory.
Polo was the only Power player with multiple hits, going 2-4 with a double and Carlos Munoz paced the offense with two runs batted in.
The Power have a chance to earn a split of the four game series on Tuesday Night. Logan Sendelbach will get the ball for West Virginia, opposed by Suns starter Andrew Lee. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power Park.
