
Lakewood's Taveras Tames Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Lakewood's Jose Taveras silenced the Kannapolis offense over seven innings on the mound to pitch the BlueClaws past the Intimidators, 4-1, on Monday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. The Intimidators (15-16) dropped below .500 while seeing the team's 3-game winning streak snapped.
Taveras (1-2) retired 21 of the 23 batters he faced to earn the win. He struck out five and walked none while working around two hits. Robert Tasin took over with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, and procured the game's final four outs to record the save (4).
The Kannapolis bullpen worked 4 and 1/3 scoreless innings as Ryan Riga worked 2 and 1/3 innings followed by Matt Ball, who tossed the eighth and ninth frames. Ball struck out two and walked none while allowing one hit.
Luis Martinez (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two over 4 and 2/3 innings. The Intimidators starting pitcher kept the BlueClaws off the board in the first two innings before giving up a run in the third, two more in the fourth, and one in the fifth.
The BlueClaws scored the game's first run int he third when Jiandido Tromp led off with a double and scored on a Josh Tobias fielder's choice grounder. Tromp added an RBI-single in the fourth to plate Jose Pujols, and Venn Biter's sacrifice fly cashed Brendan Hayden for a 3-0 lead.
The Intimidators wrap up this home stand on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Chris Comito (0-1, 16.87 ERA) takes the mound for Kannapolis against Lakewood's LHP Tyler Gilbert (0-3, 5.61 ERA). Tuesday's game is an Arby's Two-for-Tuesday with 2-for-1 tickets with any Arby's proof of purchase.
