Taty Castellanos Wins 2021 MLS Golden Boot
November 7, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York City FC News Release
New York City FC is delighted to confirm that Taty Castellanos has been awarded the 2021 MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi.
The 23-year-old striker scored 19 goals during the regular season, including a fabulous header during Sunday's 1-1 draw against Philadelphia Union on Decision Day.
That number was matched by D.C. United's Ola Kamara, but the fact Castellanos provided eight assists to his teammates was enough to separate the pair and see the native of Mendoza, Argentina take home the trophy.
"That's a great achievement," Head Coach Ronny Deila said of Castellanos' award. "There are so many good players in this league and for him to get top scorer it's amazing. He has worked hard for it. I'm very proud of him. At the same time, I really think he deserves it. It's a fantastic thing for him and the club."
Those sentiments were echoed by Club captain Sean Johnson: "What a person first and foremost, before we talk about the soccer player. He's been somebody who's so hungry, who's given everything. I think he's led team minutes, game in and game out, how many midweek games we've had, through the good times and the bad. He's just been so hungry to score goals and help this team. He's been one player that you can never question his work ethic. He is the hardest worker in the group. He's a great kid, great head on his shoulders and he has such a massive potential. I'm extremely happy for him and it's an accomplishment that he can be proud of."
Castellanos first joined NYCFC on loan in July 2018, and confirmed a permanent transfer to the club in November of that year. 2021 has been his best season for the Club in front of goal, as the striker enjoyed a stellar campaign. Speaking on the accolade, the forward said, "I'm really happy for my teammates. It's been my best season here, but it's the culmination of a lot of hard work during the season. I played the majority of the season, pretty much every game, so it's a heavy season but I'm really happy with my performances and the outcome from the season.
"It is a moment of celebration. First and foremost, it was about my teammates. They've been with me the whole season, it's been a tough season, we've been working hard, but it's about everyone - the technical staff, the people that work at the club, everyone at the academy, the cleaners, the chef, it's a team award and I thank everyone that has helped me. I was just excited and happy, and I'm looking forward to what's next."
