Tacoma gets past Tucson

Rich Poythress hit two home runs Thursday including a walk-off homer in the tenth to hand the Tacoma Rainiers a 6-5 win over the Tucson Padres at Cheney Stadium. The Padres have lost seven of their last nine games.

Stefen Romero's RBI infield single in the first put Tacoma ahead early. The Padres opponent has scored first in 23 of the last 29 games. Abraham Almonte laid down a safety squeeze in the second to bring home Scott Savastano and extend the Rainiers lead to 2-0. After Taijuan Walker struck out four of the six Tucson batters to start game, Mike Wilson blasted a leadoff home run in the third to put the Padres on the board. Poythress responded with a two-run homer off the top of the left field wall in the bottom of the third to push the Rainiers advantage to three runs.

Tucson struck for four runs in the fourth, all coming with two outs, to take a 5-4 lead over the Rainiers. The first run came home on Gregorio Petit's RBI single, while Chris Robinson's two-run single knotted the score up at four. Jesus Merchan's single to center scored Wilson to put the Padres ahead. Jason Jaramillo blooped an RBI double into left to tie the game at five in the eighth. Poythress lined a solo home run past left field in bottom of the tenth to seal the victory for the Rainiers. The Padres are now 6-3 in extra-inning games.

Reliever Josh Kinney earned his first win with Tacoma, while Brad Brach was charged with his second loss for the Padres. Tucson starter Robbie Erlin pitched five innings and scattered four runs on seven hits in the game. Walker, who entered the game having allowed only two runs at the Triple-A Level, yielded five runs and struck out eight batters in five innings of work.
