Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Rich Poythress homered twice, including a walk-off blast in extra innings, to propel the Tacoma Rainiers to a 6-5 win over the Tucson Padres at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.
Poythress delivered a solo home run off Padres right-hander Brad Bach with one out in the 10th inning to seal a series win for the Rainiers over Tucson in the finale between the two clubs.
The first baseman went deep earlier in the night with a two-run blast to left field that stretched the Rainiers lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Poythress also collected a double and scored three runs on the way to turning in a 3-for-4 effort.
The extra-inning heroics were made possible after Tacoma battled back from a 5-4 deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Jason Jaramillo doubled on a soft fly ball to left field that plated Poythress with two outs.
Right-handed reliever Josh Kinney (1-2) earned the win after collecting the final out in the top of the 10th. Kinney, Brian Sweeney (2.0 IP), Carter Capps (2.0 IP) and Bobby LaFromboise (0.2 IP) combined to limit the Padres to two hits over five scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen.
Starter Taijuan Walker surrendered five runs on six hits over five innings in his fifth start for the Rainiers this season. The right-hander struck out eight batters and issued three walks.
The Rainiers (59-47) hit the road to play a four-game series at the Reno Aces (42-64) beginning at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, July 25. Right-hander Blake Beavan (4-3, 5.10) is slated to start for Tacoma in the opener against Aces right-hander Brandon McCarthy (0-0, 12.46)
