Kansas City Monarchs News Release

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.- The Kansas City T-Bones scored early and often in their season-opening contest with the Schaumburg Flyers Thursday night, building an early five-run lead then holding on for a 9-8 victory.

Charles Peterson put Kansas City on the board in the top of the first when he hammered a two-out offering from Schaumburg starter Rick DeHart (0-1) off the left-field scoreboard for a three-run home run in his first plate appearance as a T-Bone. Schaumburg would answer with some fireworks of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as Chris Weekly clubbed a three-run homer to give the Flyers a 4-3 advantage.

After adding a single run in the second inning, the T-Bones struck for five runs in the third to take a 9-4 lead. The inning was highlighted by another three-run homer, this time provided by centerfielder Michael Spidale.

Schaumburg ate into the margin with a single tally in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth off Kansas City starter Greg Bicknell (1-0). David Viane relieved Bicknell in the sixth and worked two scoreless innings before yielding a run in the eighth.

T-Bones closer Byron Embry got the final out of the eighth, then slammed the door shut on Schaumburg's comeback in the ninth, retiring three straight Flyers after surrendering a lead-off double to Rob Watson. In his 1.1 IP Embry fanned three hitters, including two in the ninth with the tying run in scoring position, to earn the save.

Despite surrendering seven runs in his five innings of work, Bicknell picked up his club-record 30th career victory.

The T-Bones and Flyers will meet for the second game of their four-game series Friday at 7:05 p.m.
