Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Calgary, Alberta - Jay Pecci tied a club record with five base hits and Brad Vericker drilled a three-run home run as the Gary SouthShore RailCats pounded out 19 hits in defeating the Calgary Vipers 12-6 on Thursday night in the Northern League season opener for both clubs.
Gary took advantage of two Calgary errors to score five runs in the second inning as they sent 10 batters to the plate despite the fact that only one ball left the infield. Calgary answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and then added one more in the third to tie the game at 5-5.
Gary broke the tie in the fourth when Eric McNamee walked, went to second on Pecci's single, and scored on a single to right by Jermaine Allensworth. The RailCats added another run in the fifth when Chris Curry singled with two out, went to second on Eric McNamee's single, and scored on Pecci's double to right to make it 7-5.
Allensworth led off the Gary sixth inning with a bunt single and Tanner Townsend followed with a bloop single to center. Nathan Haynes lined a double to left to score Allensworth to make it 8-5. Vericker followed with a home run to right-center field, a three-run shot, to give Gary an 11-5 lead.
After Calgary scored an unearned run in the eighth, the RailCats scored one in the ninth on a single by Curry, a double by Pecci to move Curry to third, and a sacrifice fly by Steve Haake.
RailCats starting pitcher Willie Glen picked up the win, working five innings and allowing six hits and five runs (two earned) with one walk and three strikeouts.
The teams meet again Friday at 8:05 p.m. (CDT). Josh Habel will start for the RailCats.
Notes: The 19 hits by the RailCats were two short of their club record and more than they collected in any game in 2005...Pecci joined Anthony Iapoce, Jason Hill, and Francisco Matos as RailCats players with five hits in a game...Haake carried a 13 game hitting streak over from 2005 and extended it to 14 with a first inning double...Curry had three hits and also reached base on a hit batsman...RailCats relievers Steve Edsall, Kris Regas, and Jeff Mault combined to throw four innings and allow just one unearned run.
